Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Is She Pregnant?
Claire pressed her lips tightly together, not saying a word.
Tristan Lockwood glanced at her furrowed brow, worried she might get a headache from frowning too much, he reached out to smooth it and said, "Your assistant is too impulsive in her work, and now she has a criminal record. It’s best you fire her to avoid future trouble."
She lifted her gaze to look at him, "Are you telling me to hit someone when they’re down?"
Tristan said emotionlessly, "Isn’t this because of her issues with Kiara Vance, causing you to be involved?"
Seeing her expression of disagreement, he sneered, "What, when you threatened to extort money from me, you’d stop at nothing, but now you play the moral defender, promoting traditional virtues?"
Claire didn’t want to continue speaking with him much.
She wanted to find a chance to visit Tina Hayes at the police station, but Tristan seemed to have seen through her intention, staying in the hospital room to watch over her for several days.
She couldn’t afford to be confrontational, not only was she unable to outrun him, but getting into an argument also brought on bouts of dizziness and nausea.
Early in the morning, Claire woke up again with dizziness and nausea, feeling a great urge to vomit.
Tristan brought over ice cubes and applied a cold compress to her head.
When Clarence Finch walked in for a consultation, he happened to see Claire dry heaving, next to her was Tristan, patiently accompanying her.
Clarence chuckled, teasingly saying, "Is she pregnant?"
Tristan gave him a meaningful glance.
Clarence continued, "Old Lockwood, when did you find such a beautiful girlfriend like Miss Hale? I heard Miss Hale is a lawyer; you two are quite a pair."
"I’m not his girlfriend."
Claire denied softly.
Clarence was taken aback, asking Tristan, "Are you still chasing her?"
Tristan glanced at Claire with a smirk, casually saying, "Chase what? She’s eager to marry me, isn’t that right, Lawyer Hale?"
Claire curled her lips, unconcerned, "You decide."
Their playful banter left Clarence confused, thinking if Tristan really felt nothing for her, would he have reacted like a madman that day?
"You really have no interest in Miss Hale?"
After leaving the hospital room, Clarence asked Tristan in earnest.
Tristan lowered his gaze and glanced at him, "Since when did you become so nosy?"
Clarence replied, "If you don’t fancy her, I’ll make a move. My family is pushing me to get married, Miss Hale is beautiful, appears aloof and firm, my family would definitely like her."
Tristan laughed coldly.
"Go ahead if you want to pursue her, but if my grandpa finds out, don’t come crying to me for help."
"Elder Lockwood?" Clarence was puzzled, "What does pursuing Miss Hale have to do with Elder Lockwood?"
Tristan stopped in his tracks, turning slightly to look at him, saying, "Claire is his granddaughter-in-law, what do you think?"
?
Granddaughter-in-law?
Elder Lockwood only has one grandson, Tristan, right?
Clarence’s mind turned quickly, "Lawyer Hale is your..."
Tristan’s lips held a chilling, lurking smile, leaving Clarence unsure of his meaning, feeling a chill down his spine, he withdrew his words, turning to say:
"Old Lockwood, you’re hiding a beauty in secret, not leaking any hints? Miss Hale is so attractive, with a good personality, and successful in her career, you’re rather lucky."
Tristan said blandly, "Arranged by the family."
Clarence quickly picked up his meaning, "So you’re not willing to marry her?"
Tristan said nothing.
Clarence asked again, "What family background does your wife have? How come I’ve never heard her name in the circle?"
The Lockwood family is well-known in Riverbend; the Finch family, though not as prominent, still overlaps in social circles, yet Tristan and his friends have never mentioned her.
But presumably, with Elder Lockwood arranging the marriage, the family must be extraordinary.
Tristan replied, "The Hale Family."
Clarence was taken aback, "The Hale Family that was sworn brothers with Elder Lockwood? But isn’t the Hale Family’s only daughter unmarried?"
He just said it when suddenly realizing something, his face changed, "Could it be true, the rumor about Evan Hale having a secret daughter with a nanny back then?"
Tristan’s voice turned icy, "Clarence, you talk too much."
Clarence stifled his shock, lowering his voice, "Miss Hale with such a background, marrying her, what help could it be for your future?"
"Not much help."
Tristan’s gaze turned deep and contemplative.
Clarence finally understood why he hid her away secretly, in the affluent circle, background is everything, and illegitimate children are most unacceptable.
Clarence, "You’re the only grandson of the Lockwood family, surely Elder Lockwood wouldn’t overlook this, right?"
"Isn’t there that man?" Tristan said lightly, "Grandpa’s always favored him."
Clarence sighed, hearing footsteps behind him, he turned around, Claire was walking coldly towards them.
His expression changed immediately, not knowing how much she had heard.
Claire, on the other hand, swept past them nonchalantly, saying, "Next time you gossip about others, be mindful, you can hear it from afar."
Clarence felt awkward, his toes nearly curling into a three-bedroom apartment, desperately signaling Tristan to help diffuse the situation.
Tristan pretended not to see it and even joined in to mock, "Doctor Finch, curiosity killed the cat, that’s the consequence of gossiping."
The couple, singing in perfect harmony, left Clarence speechless for a long while. It seemed despite their apparent discord, their tacit understanding could perform a duet.
Tristan noticed Claire had changed out of her hospital gown, frowned, and asked, "Where are you going?"
Claire, "Police station."
"Don’t I ever say anything that sinks in?" Tristan frowned, staring at her head wrapped in bandages, "Healed scars forgotten pain?"
Claire paused, looked at him, and asked, "Is this concern?"
Tristan was silent for a second, "It’s doctor’s orders."
"Thank you, Dr. Lockwood, I’ll be back soon."
Leaving behind this distant and polite remark, she walked off without turning back. Just outside the hospital, a low-key and expensive Porsche stopped in front of her.
The car window rolled down, Tristan turned his face to her and said, "Get in."
Claire raised an eyebrow in surprise.
Tristan, "If anything else happens to you, grandpa may not be able to keep it under wraps anymore. By then, who knows, he might give me another slap."
This was him reluctantly playing the protector because he couldn’t back to Elder Lockwood.
Claire didn’t hesitate, just got in the car directly.
After all, getting a free ride and not taking it would be wasteful.
Although he was driving her to the police station, Tristan clearly had no intention of helping, idly smoking outside once they arrived.
When Claire went in, Tina Hayes was having prison food, eating heartily with a great appetite.
She had a sweet and charming appearance and was sociable, the guard even added an extra chicken leg for her.
"Thanks a lot big bro."
Tina smiled sweetly, her eyes crinkled. Seeing Claire visit her, she asked, "President Hale, have you eaten yet? Shall I serve you a bowl?"
Claire, "You’re the first one to offer me prison food."
Tina chuckled awkwardly.
"How’s your injury? It’s only been a few days and you’re already running around."
Seeing the bandages still on her head, Tina couldn’t help but show concern.
Claire saw she was in good spirits, seemingly unaffected by being in custody, and felt reassured, saying, "What happened with you and Kiara Vance?"
