Chapter 170

Chapter 170: Suspect
Rong Xingyu: "..."
R-Really?
He swallowed back the tears and forced his voice to sound firm. "I’m not crying. You must have seen wrong."
Rong Zhijian clicked his tongue, but then recalled some of the little tips Rong Zishan had once taught him about how to get closer to a younger brother.
So he stepped forward, raised his hand, and a bit stiffly reached out to pat Rong Xingyu on the head.
But Rong Zhijian’s grip was a little too strong and Rong Xingyu was jostled this way and that.
The whole scene instantly became awkward and strange.
Rong Xingyu: "..."
He quickly raised his hands to protect his head. "Third Brother! Third Brother! Stop!"
At the words, Rong Zhijian paused and placing a finger to his lips as he coughed lightly.
Rong Xingyu’s hair had been messed up, but strangely, he no longer felt as upset as before.
He couldn’t help asking Rong Zhijian, "Third Brother... do you really believe me?"
Rong Zhijian looked at him as if he were looking at a fool. "You’re my brother. Why wouldn’t I believe you?"
Rong Xingyu: "Okay."
His heart feels a little warm when he heard that.
At the same time, Rong Xingyu finally remembered the other assignment that had been "plagiarized."
"Then... whose assignment is the other one?"
"Who is it? Xiaoyu, you really can’t guess?"
Rong Xingyu would never stoop to plagiarism, so whose assignment had overlapped with his data?
He couldn’t help but ask.
Hearing this, Rong Zhijian lifted his gaze, his calm eyes behind the glasses falling on Rong Xingyu’s face.
"You really can’t guess who it is?"
There was no hidden meaning in Rong Zhijian’s words; it was just pure curiosity.
Because in his eyes, Rong Xingyu had already likely suspected someone.
Sure enough, Rong Xingyu pressed his lips together and fell silent.
As Rong Zhijian had said, how could he not have an idea of who it was?
Rong Xingyu’s heart felt like it had been weighed down by an iron block, sinking heavily.
Yet he really didn’t want to believe it—it was almost unbearable to accept this truth.
He swallowed hard and said with difficulty, "Could it be..."
Rong Zhijian took the tablet from Rong Xingyu, found the signature on the other assignment and turned the screen toward him.
Seeing the name clearly on the screen, Rong Xingyu’s eyelashes trembled rapidly, but he finally spoke the name that had been haunting his mind for so long.
"Pan Yinhu."
The fog that had clouded Rong Xingyu’s heart was suddenly lifted and the entire truth became clear.
No wonder he had felt all along that things weren’t as simple as they seemed.
Looking back now, Rong Xingyu realized that he had actually already suspected Pan Yinhu because of all the strange behaviors he had displayed. But out of the bond of being roommates and the countless days they had spent together that semester, Rong Xingyu had always subconsciously excused Pan Yinhu in his heart.
Yet the laboratory with the broken camera had indeed been reserved by Pan Yinhu.
And now, the two assignments with overlapping data were placed directly in front of Rong Xingyu.
His emotions were complicated and he couldn’t quite put a name to what he was feeling.
"Yinhu...???" Ye Shiyuan’s eyes widened in shock when he heard Rong Xingyu’s words.
He had been standing slightly behind Rong Xingyu, but now he suddenly stepped forward with shock expression. "Impossible... how could it be Yinhu?!"
But when Ye Shiyuan saw the name on the tablet clearly, it was as if someone had grabbed him by the throat and he went completely silent.
Ye Shiyuan had wanted to say that perhaps it was a mistake, but he simply couldn’t bring himself to speak.
In the end, he muttered quietly, "Why would he do this?"
Rong Xingyu remained silent and didn’t respond.
Ye Shiyuan suddenly recalled the person they had deduced from the surveillance footage to have tampered with Rong Xingyu’s data.
Before coming to the laboratory, Ye Shiyuan had been confident that they would soon catch that bastard and give him a proper punishment to vent on Rong Xingyu’s behalf.
But now...
"The person in the footage doesn’t match Yinhu’s height, right?" Ye Shiyuan muttered in frustration. "We’ve lived in the same dorm this long and there’s no way he could hide the scars on his hand from us."
"The person in the surveillance footage isn’t Pan Yinhu, but it’s definitely connected to him."
Rong Xingyu had calmed down considerably now.
After explaining this to Ye Shiyuan, he turned his gaze to Rong Zhijian. "Third Brother, if I weren’t your brother, just an ordinary student, and I saw two assignments like this, what would you do?"
Rong Zhijian adjusted his glasses and, almost without thinking, replied, "Trust the evidence and void your final grade."
Rong Xingyu pressed his lips together.
Indeed, Pan Yinhu had the means to "prove his innocence," leaving himself completely clean, while Rong Xingyu had no way to argue.
All he could prove was that his original data had been tampered with, which was why he had had to re-record and reorganize it afterward.
But the system’s records had already been overwritten and there was no other direct evidence pointing to Pan Yinhu.
If Pan Yinhu insisted that Rong Xingyu had plagiarized, there would be nothing Rong Xingyu could do.
Rong Zhijian only taught a general course at Liaofang University. His time was extremely valuable and he had no interest in following the "schemes and conflicts" between students he didn’t know well.
Void Rong Xingyu’s final grade seemed to be the simplest and most reasonable solution.
After all, based on the "evidence" available, Rong Xingyu appeared to be the one in the wrong.
But why would Pan Yinhu do this to him? Rong Xingyu’s emotions were deeply conflicted.
He thought of how frugal Pan Yinhu was in daily life, yet in academics, he was meticulous and unwavering.
Pan Yinhu was also the most diligent and hardworking among all the roommates, he often staying up late at night under the bed canopy and reading quietly with a small night lamp until one or two in the morning.
