Chapter 58: The Mango Plot
The fiery red lisianthus reminded him of the little mermaid, the way she had cut off her red hair and traded it for legs, her life burning bright like a flame.
"Just receiving your flowers already makes me really happy," he said honestly.
Ding Yixin looked at the young man who is holding the bouquet.
His cheeks were flushed, his dark eyes soft and shining with a quiet smile.
At that moment, he looked more delicate and more beautiful than the flowers themselves.
Ding Yixin gave a low laugh and said softly,
"But I also prepared another gift for you. I’m sure you won’t refuse this one. Come with me and see for yourself."
"...Huh?"
Seeing the confident look on Dr. Rong’s face, Rong Xingyu’s curiosity was instantly caught.
While hugging his bouquet tightly, he followed behind him like an eager little pup.
"What is it exactly?"
"You’ll find out soon," Ding Yixin replied with calm amusement.
"Come on, just tell me first, Dr. Rong!"
"That’s a secret."
"..."
The night was hazy, the soft golden streetlights filtering through the gaps between the trees.
Two figures with their shadows long and elegant walked side by side down the quiet, tree-lined path, their backs perfectly in tune with each other as they disappeared into the warm night.
Meanwhile, in one of the backstage dressing rooms of the auditorium, a young man stood facing Rong Zhihao with a strange look on his face.
That young man looked familiar, it was Lin Yutong, the same student who had once splashed milk tea on Rong Xingyu in the cafeteria and had almost been expelled for it.
At the time, if it hadn’t been for Rong Xingyu who, out of disinterest and a quiet sense of mercy, told the school that expulsion was too harsh Lin Yutong would’ve long been kicked out of Qibao Dwith School.
Even so, he hadn’t escaped punishment; the demerit stayed on his record.
Now, Lin Yutong was sweating nervously, his voice trembling but firm as he swore to Rong Zhihao, "I swear, I saw it myself! Rong Xingyu definitely drank the juice with mango in it!"
Rong Zhihao’s expression turned dark and twisted.
He gritted his teeth, his words squeezed out from between them, "He drank it? Didn’t you say Rong Xingyu is allergic to mango?"
Earlier that day, Rong Zhihao had called Lin Yutong because he knew the boy used to trail after Rong Xingyu constantly, trying to please him and learn his preferences.
When Lin Yutong mentioned that Rong Xingyu was allergic to mango, a reckless, bitter idea had flashed through Rong Zhihao’s mind.
Why was it that everyone only ever noticed Rong Xingyu?
Their classmates, even his older brothers and everyone’s attention seemed fixed on him.
Wasn’t he supposed to be the real young master of the Rong family?
Why did that imposter, that fake, get to take everything that rightfully belonged to him?
Jealousy and resentment burned inside him like fire.
Rong Xingyu had taken over his life for more than ten years.
It was time, Rong Zhihao thought, for everything to be returned to where it should be.
If he could make Rong Xingyu embarrass himself on stage...
After all, Rong Xingyu had always looked down on him, mocked him and humiliated him.
This was just revenge, nothing more.
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
That was how Rong Zhihao justified it to himself.
What he completely ignored, however, was that he was the one now living in the Rong family’s old mansion, riding in private cars with a chauffeur and enjoying the treatment of a true young master.
Rong Zhenqiao, their eldest brother, had already done everything he could to make up for both of them, his blood brother and the boy he had raised for over a decade.
But Rong Zhihao refused to see that.
All he could see was how Rong Xingyu’s light kept growing stronger, bright and brilliant, to the point of being unbearable to look at.
So he told Lin Yutong to deliver that glass of juice that has been mixed with a small amount of mango to Rong Xingyu backstage before the performance.
He even made sure Lin Yutong saw with his own eyes that Rong Xingyu drank it.
It was just a little mango juice, he thought.
It wouldn’t kill him and it would only make a rash break out on his face.
That would be enough.
During the performance, Rong Zhihao sat in the audience feeling nervous yet excited while waiting for Rong Xingyu to appear on stage.
But what he hadn’t expected at all was that after drinking the mango juice Rong Xingyu showed no reaction whatsoever.
His skin was still smooth, his face clear and perfect under the stage lights, flawless like porcelain.
Hearing the people beside him gasp in admiration, Rong Zhihao’s fingernails dug deep into his palms, his jealousy slicing through his own flesh.
How could this be happening?! He drank the whole thing!
Lin Yutong was confused as well.
He knew very clearly that Rong Xingyu absolutely avoided mangoes, he never ate even a bite and just smelling them could make him angry.
This time, Lin Yutong had gone out of his way to mix several kinds of fruits together and make them into a blended juice, just so Rong Xingyu wouldn’t suspect anything when he drank it.
But to his complete shock, Rong Xingyu seemed perfectly fine afterward.
No allergic reaction.
Nothing at all.
How strange...
...
"Don’t you think something feels a little weird lately?" Rong Xingyu asked quietly while turning his head to his desk mate whose sitting next to him, Qian Zhijun.
It had already been a week since the school’s anniversary performance, yet for the past several days, Rong Xingyu couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
Even just a few minutes ago, when he and Qian Zhijun went to the cafeteria together as they reached the entrance, a boy he had never seen before came walking out.
