Chapter 65: Old Friends and New Faces
Rong Xingyu followed his gaze and saw six or seven young men and women lounging on the other side of the room.
They were all dressed in designer clothes, glittering with brand names from head to toe.
Yet despite their polished appearances, their faces carried the same arrogant and careless expressions Rong Xingyu had once seen on street punks in his previous life.
What a shame, given how expensive their outfits looked.
When the group noticed him looking their way, their expressions shifted, some of them smirked, one even whistled mockingly at him.
Digging through the original boy’s memories, Rong Xingyu vaguely recognized a few of them. They were the well-known "spoiled rich kids" of the circle, the type of person who always caused trouble and lived off their family names.
Apparently, the original version of him used to hang around with them quite a bit, their personalities a perfect match in recklessness and ego.
When the truth about the fake young master came out, the original Rong Xingyu was immediately kicked out of that little circle.
Now those same people were suddenly acting all friendly again. R
ong Xingyu found it ridiculous, did they really think he was so stupid that he’d go running over to them just to embarrass himself?
He gave them a polite smile and said calmly, "Thank you, but you guys go have fun. I just want to sit here for a while."
Rong Zhihao hadn’t expected Rong Xingyu to turn him down and for a moment, his smile froze.
What was going on? Wasn’t Rong Xingyu supposed to beg him for help fitting back into the upper class circle?
After all, right now, he was the one who stood on equal footing with those second generation heirs, he was the one they called a friend.
Unwilling to give up, Rong Zhihao tried again to persuade him, but Rong Xingyu refused just as gently.
His expression was sincere, but the more genuine he looked, the more it made Rong Zhihao’s chest tighten with irritation.
An unexplainable burst of anger rose up inside him.
"I’m just trying to help you socialize out of kindness. Why are you being so ungrateful?" he snapped.
Rong Xingyu blinked his eyes and momentarily speechless.
He opened his mouth to respond but before he could say anything, a familiar voice came from behind.
"Our Xiaoyu already has his own friends. He doesn’t need you to help him socialize."
Rong Xingyu’s eyes lit up with surprise and joy as he turned around. "Zhijun!"
It was Qian Zhijun.
Today, Qian Zhijun was wearing a small and well-fitted suit. He had clearly taken some effort to dress up. After arriving, it had taken him a while to find Rong Xingyu in the crowded hall.
He had just walked up while holding his gift with excitement, when he overheard Rong Zhihao’s self-important tone.
Unable to hold back his temper, Qian Zhijun fired back immediately.
"That’s right! Who said Xiaoyu doesn’t have friends?" he said with a defiant grin.
Rong Xingyu blinked again, looking behind him. "Yue Yeqiao? Zeng Youzhen? You guys came too?"
Yue Yeqiao handed him a beautifully wrapped gift with a huff. "Of course! If your big brother hadn’t sent us invitations, we wouldn’t have even known it was your birthday today! What kind of friend hides something like that?"
Rong Xingyu’s eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, you’re saying my big brother sent you the invitations?"
"Yeah," Yue Yeqiao nodded matter-of-factly.
"You guys—" Rong Zhihao started to say something, but before he could finish, Zeng Youzhen adjusted his glasses and spoke slowly, his tone dripping with mockery.
"Oh, Student Council President, you’re still here? Shouldn’t you be off with your own friends? Oh wait... don’t tell me you don’t have any? Why don’t you stay and hang out with us then?"
His tone was almost a perfect imitation of Rong Zhihao’s earlier words, nine parts identical, just with sharper sarcasm.
Rong Zhihao’s face turned bright red. His expression twisted for a moment before he forced out a cold snort and turned to leave.
He hadn’t even made it far when laughter erupted behind him.
He stumbled slightly and quickening his steps to get away.
Qian Zhijun and Yue Yeqiao were laughing so hard they nearly doubled over.
Yue Yeqiao wiped away tears as she slapped Zeng Youzhen’s shoulder.
"Hahaha! You’re a genius, Youyou!"
Zeng Youzhen pushed his glasses up again and smiling smugly. "Thank you, thank you. I call that using magic to fight magic."
Rong Xingyu: "..."
What kind of nonsense is that?
But watching his friends laugh together, their bright smiles filling the air, Rong Xingyu couldn’t help it, he finally laughed too.
After the laughter and teasing settled down, the group of friends sat together on the sofa, happily eating their slices of cake.
"It’s a shame I missed seeing you cut the cake," Qian Zhijun said while taking a big bite. "My sister and I were stuck in traffic forever on the way here. I was so anxious I almost jumped out of the car."
Yue Yeqiao and Zeng Youzhen turned to look at him in surprise.
"You got stuck in traffic too?" they asked at the same time.
Everyone looked at each other in confusion.
"I even specially did my makeup today," Zeng Youzhen said while flicking her shiny heels. "I wanted to come early, but we were stuck there for over half an hour. If I hadn’t been wearing high heels, I might’ve just walked over!"
Yue Yeqiao nodded, adding, "My driver went to check. Apparently, some big shot was supposed to pass by, so they blocked off the whole road. We couldn’t go until their car was gone."
Qian Zhijun raised a hand excitedly. "Oh! I think I know who it was! My sister said the license plate looked like it belonged to the Ding family."
"The Ding family?" Zeng Youzhen glanced at Rong Xingyu, then she lowered her voice to ask Yue Yeqiao, "You mean Ding Wei?"
Yue Yeqiao snorted. "Please, Ding Wei doesn’t have that kind of pull. I bet it was his uncle."
