Chapter 390: Amongst the Stars, I Closed My Eyes
[TAMIKO]
"Hello, Kawai," Tamiko greeted like he wasn’t making their blood pressure spike with every second they were there and he didn’t say shit. Yet now that he had spoken, they were responding softly.
They weren’t sure if this was the last time they would ever see their lives or if this was the hell that they needed to brace themselves for. It was crazy, how shit had gotten so fast but it wasn’t something that Tamiko cared to even think about.
This wasn’t about the time that he had been hurt, no.
This was about a new beginning.
"I know you are probably curious about why I rang the bell and got you all here instead of using the mind links. As many of you know, I am a man with no Erasthai," Tamiko spoke, and Kosta stilled.
He had not expected this.
There was something about Tamiko’s tone.
Something about the way that he stood there casually, not bothering to even look at Kosta.
And that bothered Igor Konstantin.
Tamiko never made any speeches without looking at Kosta. It was like the Lycan chief was his world and now they both were so close and yet so damn far. Fuck, Kosta needed to have a word with Yilena Sidorova.
His guardian was already fucking him over again.
It was one thing to hear through the rumors that Tamiko had let him be, but it was another to hear the prince who was his, who had always been his, proclaim to the entire kingdom — that was thirsting after him — that he had no Erasthai.
That was like a stab in the heart and fuck it if Kosta didn’t feel that pinch down to his spine. What the actual fuck was going on?
"And I have forced my former Erasthai to bear my mark for a while now. I know it is not fair to him, since he has a new Erasthai. I wanted you all to see that I can be a better person. I know I’m covered in blood and probably look worse than you have seen Papa at his worst—
"...but I promise, today, this is a harmless meeting," Tamiko continued as he looked back, only to smile at his father, uncle and then at Danny who was watching him curiously. He then turned to look at the people of Kawaii, like he wasn’t meant to look at Kosta again.
And Sanji saw the way that Kosta’s fists curled up. He could see the pained expression that the Lycan chief was struggling to hide so damn well. Kosta’s caramel scent had started getting bitter, and Tamiko knew that too.
Everyone around them could feel the change.
The king, wasn’t sure what the fuck his son was aiming for. This was worse than the time they had been kicked out of Liana’s house because they were not good enough to be Nakamura’s new family.
It had been the craziest moment of the king and Sadako’s lives.
Yet this moment right here was worse.
It was terrible.
It hurt, even the king could feel the pain that came with what he was watching. And yet, even then, he knew that Tamiko needed to do whatever he wanted to. He needed to do something himself, even if his heart got shattered in the process.
"What the hell are you doing?" Kosta whispered.
Tamiko ignored him.
Tamiko had never done that.
And Kosta’s heart ached.
Because this was a first.
"Chief Kostantin..." Tamiko began as he looked at Kosta this time.
His face was no longer guarded like he had even when he had gone to seek out Kosta back there. This time, as the entire Kawai watched his back, Tamiko let his Erasthai see him one more time. He wouldn’t have to do this ever again.
"I’m sorry I wasn’t the best Erasthai. I made a thousand and one promises... and yet was bested by the promise to protect you forever... What a joke," Tamiko said, adding the last bid bitterly and angrily.
But he didn’t let the Kawai Lycans feel his rage or even his hurt. His scent was too controlled, like he was doing this purely out of goodwill. But his family and friends could see his face. They could see the way that this hurt to let out.
Hell,
his
Kosta could see the hurt on his face.
"I should have been smarter, my precious. I should have fought harder for you. But I was just a boy in love. A boy who thought he could have everything now that he finally had his papa and a new family that actually gave a shit if he was okay or not.
"I didn’t know that I could encounter trouble on this side too... or maybe I did. I did know that I would face trouble, but I expected that to be because I was the rogue Lycan who just showed up in Kawai, with a claim to the crown prince of Kawai.
"I didn’t think... I never once thought I would have to trade my presence in your life for an eternal absence because I had to protect you. Maybe I should have killed her back then, but you would have been sad our entire lives. I couldn’t let that happen to you.
"If Sanjiro makes you happy, if he is your choice, then I won’t fight it. I’m not saying this to make you feel guilty, my beautiful. I’m saying I understand why you had to. I know you want me to kill you, but how can I kill the one thing that made me the happiest?
"You’re free, Konstantin. All the bounds I set on you are off I know you can feel it now. As for Sanji, I’ll come after him last, of the Furfantes. A life is owed, and this is unfortunately part of that, too. I hope you forgive me then.
"Maybe I’m asking for too much, but please be happy. I’ll live my life being the crown prince or someday the king of Kawai, and I hope to be a good king for them when that time comes," Tamiko whispered softly and earnestly.
His inner circle stared at them both with newfound confusion.
The words that Tamiko had spoken had been meant for Kosta and so the Lycans of Kawai didn’t hear shit, save for this tiny group here. It was evident that they still loved each other. That their hearts were still in sync.
It wasn’t something anyone could deny.
Yet as Tamiko let Kosta be free, Sanji was the first to feel the weight of being chosen.
He had agreed because he wanted to help Kosta, but now, he wasn’t sure breaking two hearts was something that he had to be a part of.
However, before he could say something, Tamiko turned to the Kwai Lycans with a smile on his face, like his heart hadn’t just been ripped open.
"Sanjiro, I hope that you don’t mind me taking back my Erasthai in my next lifeline. I plan to be a deserving Erasthai then," Tamiko said casually and Sanji just stared, unsure of what the fuck he was to do.
This was all new to him.
He felt like a bull being fattened for slaughter, and while Tamiko had admitted that he was going to kill Sanji eventually, that wasn’t the part that stressed Sanji out. It was the way Tamiko had managed to stay calm despite the storm of emotions around him.
This Lycan prince was something, or maybe he was the devil that had learned from the master of hell himself — Zaffuto Hinata, right?
"Anyway, dear Kawai, now that this is done. My mark on Chief Kostantin will disappear within two weeks. Don’t even think of disrespecting the Lycan chief. Effective immediately, the Lycan Chief and his Erasthai won’t have to stay at the borders anymore.
"The kingdom needs its Lycan chief, and as such, the chief will live with his new Erasthai in the palace in the south-west wing as demanded by the Kawai accords. That is all from me. Dismissed," Tamiko said before he disappeared.
He didn’t even look at his Erasthai one last time.
It was as if he didn’t want to be here anymore. Like he couldn’t bear the same air as Kosta. He had a lot yet nothing to say to Kosta at the same time, and perhaps that’s why it had been the best idea for him to pull the disappearance act.
Maybe it would be worth it for real, yeah?
But Kosta saw that smirk on his face.
And Kosta breathed out a sigh of relief.
What if he was wrong, though?
