Chapter 389: Too Close To The Rhythm
[TAMIKO]
Tamiko had expected this.
He knew Kosta was still angry and would try to bait him. The fact that he came dressed in official Lycan Chief wear, with Sanji dressed for the assembly, was not a coincidence.
They both knew what they were doing and honestly, Tamiko wasn’t sure what to think of that. He wanted to be angry. To lash out at Kosta for coming with the traitor he had insisted on banishing himself.
He wanted to curse him out for letting the entire kingdom know that he had truly abandoned his position as the prince’s Erasthai and really chose to go with Sanji as his date and everything.
Tamiko felt it twist in his stomach, but he was honestly not going to give them both the pleasure of seeing him lose his shit. He wasn’t going to sit by and watch as everything went away.
He would fight back, maybe not today, but he would.
"I suppose you need to make space for your new Erasthai, Chief, right? You can take your rightful position beside the Lycan Lords," Tamiko said, his voice so syrupy sweet that for a moment, Kosta faltered.
He had been expecting rage, the same rage that had left Tamiko covered in blood like he was at the moment; he had expected Tamiko to make Sanji suffer or even humiliate both of them.
A part of Kosta expected Tamiko to fight for him, to claim him, here in front of the kingdom like he had done years ago, when the ministers had dared to look down on Kosta.
That was still, hands down, the most powerful thing that someone had ever done for Igor Konstantin.
"Thank you, your majesty," Sanji dared to add and yet again, Tamiko smiled courteously like he didn’t want to tear through Sanji and make him remember that Kosta was his. That Kosta has always and forever belonged to Tamiko.
There was no doubt and Tamiko was more than willing to fight everyone for Kosta, but he had made a mistake back then. He had made the worst possible mistake that he couldn’t take back.
His single decision had pushed his Erasthai into the arms of the man who was scared shitless of Igor Kostantin.
And his Kosta didn’t deserve that. He didn’t deserve to be disrespected by showing the realm that he had fallen into the hands of a traitor who hated Kawai and everything that Kawai stood for.
It wasn’t fair, and yet at the same time, Tamiko wasn’t going to fight.
He wasn’t going to cause any trouble; not for the people of Kawai and definitely not for his Kosta. But what Tamiko hadn’t quite realized yet, was that his silence, his courtesy, his soft natured response, was the trigger to an anxious crowd.
The same crowd had witnessed so many deaths in literal seconds because Igor Kostantin had felt lonely and defeated. The crowd that had witnessed the most rural of murders because Igor Konstantin had shed a tear.
They knew the consequences, which was why even as they disapproved of the fact that Kosta had come with Sanjiro, none of them had the voice to speak ill of the Lycan chief. Not when there was a little danger that stared at everyone.
A few feet away, the mad king watched as his son unnerved an entire kingdom just because he had chosen to be kind.
But they had every right to be scared.
This was the prince who had been crying out there in the palace. The same prince who had killed everything in his path when he had walked to the borders to find Igor Konstantin.
The crazy prince, who was still covered in blood and smiled so heartily, like Igor Kostantin, was the only one who could take him without having to die in the process.
Perhaps this was what their relatives had become, and boy did that scare the hell out of the Lycans, including their king, who was not sure if his son was going through Lycan puberty or if Tamiko was planning to mass murder everyone here.
"This version of Tamiko is scaring me," Danny whispered moments later, once Kosta had seated and Sanjiro had taken his seat right beside Danny. It was an expected formation, but at the same time, even Kostantin couldn’t deny that this was a different hell.
"You’re his best friend. He would never do anything to hurt you. Rest assured," Kosta said softly as he looked at his Erasthai, or rather, the man who had ditched him for ten years.
Right now, Kosta may have been in his office wear, but he hadn’t dared to mask his scent. He had let everyone know that he smelled like Sanji and that his caramel blended with Sanjiro’s woody scent.
It was the one thing that should have irked Tamiko the most and had Sanji dead, and yet here they were, everyone was calmly waiting, even though their anxiety was off the roof.
"Yeah, right. Says the one who came dressed like his favorite poison. You do realize that he will never kill you, if that is what you seek, right?" Danny stated obviously.
Kosta stared at him like he didn’t know what this was about.
"I am not trying to get killed, Daniel. I am trying to live my life. I was rejected. He had made his choice, remember?" Kosta said, even though those words were foreign to his ears.
He knew this was the most dangerous thing he had ever dared to do and yet a part of him was too curious to see what Tamiko would do. Maybe he was doing this for the both of them, but even death had better choices when it was called.
This right here was scary shit. It was unnerving to the core and Kosta was very aware that he was right in the middle of it.
"Well, whatever you try to do, I hope you know he left you alone because it was either that or Yilena would kill you. She threatened him with your life, not that any of that would matter to you right now, seeing as you have a new Erasthai beside you.
"Maybe I am meddling, but I hope Sanjiro truly makes you happy," Danny said, his sincerity making Kosta feel like he couldn’t breathe.
He couldn’t think straight,
He had suspected that Yilena had something to do with this, but then Tamiko was never the kind to be threatened.
There was nothing that could be used against Tamiko by anyone.
Then again, Kosta knew that he was the one person Tamiko would go to hell for, and as he looked at the prince who had just stood to address the crown, Kosta felt his heart ache for the man before him.
Surely there was an excuse that could explain what had happened to them, but even Kosta had long known it. He had been there when Yilena had made the dare to Tamiko.
She had threatened him right before Kosta, and even though it was indirect, the effects had lasted ten years. Those had been the most agonizing years of their lives, and Kosta, in his desperation, had chosen the worst of the worst to live with for the rest of his days.
Maybe it would just be easier if Tamiko murdered him and saved them both from their misery, right?
’But he told Sanji this was war?’ Kosta thought to himself when Tamiko walked to the center of the podium.
