Welcome To Hell, Dear Wife-Chapter 47: Your Fault

Chapter 47

Chapter 47: Your Fault
Mira’s mind was so jumbled that she did not even have the chance to hear what Damian was rambling on about concerning the company.
Honestly, she couldn’t care less because all that was on her mind was simply the four and a half million dollars in gold.
Gone!
Her one chance at freedom that had been stolen. Her mind was filled with how to get them back while Damian still kept talking about some company problems.
They soon pulled through the Sanders mansion gates and got out of the car.
The living room looked like a war zone with papers scattered everywhere and empty wine bottles on the coffee table like abandoned soldiers.
The massive flat screen TV that dominated one wall was blaring breaking news with the volume turned up way too loud.
"Sanders Media stock plunged another thirty percent overnight,"
the anchor announced with practiced sympathy. "
They are now on the verge of bankruptcy as the company’s value continues to hemorrhage..."
In the center of all this disaster stood Evelyn Sanders.
Lorena’s mother was pacing back and forth like a caged animal with a wine glass clutched in her manicured fingers.
Her usually perfect hair was now hanging loose around her shoulders while her silk robe was wrinkled and even stained while hanging open over her expensive pajamas.
Mascara had run down her cheeks in dark streaks which gave her the look of a tragic opera singer that was mid performance.
She was screaming into her phone with a voice full of desperation.
"No, you listen to me! We’re so not going under! Do you hear me! My late husband did not build this for it to go under! We’ll sue you if need be! We’ll-"
She stopped mid sentence as soon as she noticed Mira and Damian entering then slammed the phone down so hard that it bounced off the marble side table.
"You!" She snapped as she stalked across the den towards them both not minding the way the wine sloshed over her fingers with each unsteady step that she took.
Her eyes were wild and unfocused yet burning with so much rage.
Before anyone could even understand what was wrong with her, her hand came up fast and connected with Mira’s cheek with a sound that sounded like wood breaking.
The slap sent Mira stumbling backward as she couldn’t control the ringing in her ear that followed while fire seemed to spread across her face.
Even the taste of blood filled her mouth suddenly where she had bitten her tongue due to the impact of the slap.
"Do you see what you have done?" She gestured at the chaos around them. All the evidence of their family’s destruction. "All of this! All of this is your fault!"
Mira was so confused and taken aback by the venom in the voice of the new and loving mother she thought she had finally gotten.
"My fault? How... what are you talking about-"
"Don’t even dare play innocent with me this time! Don’t you even dare!" Evelyn’s words came out slurred yet sharp. "You had very little task to do! Marry that man and make sure to keep him happy enough that we have no issues, enough that he doesn’t withdraw his support until we are back on our feet! But you shouldn’t even make yourself useful for once in your spoiled useless life!"
The words kept hitting Mira and even though she was so confused, she still could help shrinking back as it all became familiar to her all of a sudden. The familiarity of always being blamed for things that were beyond her control.
Damian stepped forward finally with anger in his eyes. "Mom, that’s enough-"
But Evelyn was beyond reason at this point. She was beyond stopping.
"You ruined us, Lorena!" She continued as she leaned close enough for Mira to smell the wine on her breath. "You should have just died like your father if you won’t be useful for us! Do you hear me? I should have let you die!"
The words were harsh enough to make Mira forget how to breathe nor think. The pain of the slap was now being replaced by the agony of those words.
Because suddenly she was back in her Mira world and cowering in a corner while her stepfather screamed about how much she was a burden on him. How she was nothing but a waste of space and money and how he wished she would just die.
She’d thought that was now all behind her. She’d found that Lorena had a mother who loved her so much even if she was just a stepmother too.
Yet it was all crumbling down around her right now.
Was it the alcohol talking? Was she just being stressed out of her mind because she was losing a lot?
Maybe she didn’t mean any of it and it was all said in a fit of anger?
That just had to be it. She needed to believe that.
"Enough mom!" Damian yelled this time. "Nothing warrants any of this. She’s your daughter!"
Evelyn whirled around to face him with an unsteady finger pointing at his chest.
"She’s not my daughter! She’s nothing!" Spit even flew from her lips as she screamed. "And she better not think she’s sleeping under this roof tonight unless she has done something to fix this mess! If you stay here one night, so help me God-"
"It’s fine." Mira found herself saying.
Both Evelyn and Damian turned to look at her. Her cheeks were swelling where Evelyn had struck her but her eyes were clear.
"I’ll just go home," she said quietly.
The word felt strange on her tongue.
Home
.
She was literally calling Lucas’ estate her home right now. The same place she hated so much and had thought she might not even have to go back to upon finding the money today.
But somehow, right now, it felt more like home than this house ever would.
So she walked past Evelyn without another word, and even though she heard Damian calling her name behind her, she didn’t stop.
She didn’t even look back. She needed to get out of there before she broke completely.
The ride back was full of silent tears and as soon as the driver was reaching the estate, she paid him and walked slowly toward the front entrance.
By now, the house was mostly dark with only a few windows glowing.
She walked up to the living room before she heard voices that caused her to stop.
It seemed like there was some sort of celebration happening as they laughed and clinked glasses over and over again.
This was a rare occurrence to Mira because since she started living here, they always acted like they didn’t even have the ability to smile so this was new.
She didn’t know when she pressed herself against the wall instead of walking past them.
Mountain man, Jack’s voice was the first she recognized. "Alpha really outdid himself this time. The Sanders didn’t even see it coming at all. Heck, not even I did." He then chuckled again. "I should have trusted him when he said he had plans. I was worried he was getting swayed, but I was wrong."
Aurelian’s voice followed. "Swayed? By what? Lorena? You should know that would never happen. He’s a wolf who hunts smarter. He plans every move three steps ahead. I always trust my nephew. And I’m glad that he broke the Sanders first."
Both men laughed again while Mira stumbled backward from the doorway.
They were really celebrating her family’s downfall right now?
What the actual hell?
