Welcome To Hell, Dear Wife-Chapter 48: Wolves?

Chapter 48

Chapter 48: Wolves?
Mira didn’t know where the rage she was feeling came from but she knew she had to confront Lucas this very moment.
She slammed the front door behind her so hard that she was sure even the
gossiping idiots
heard it.
Her cheeks still burned so bad from Evelyn’s slap while her chest heaved with every breath she took, but she could not let the tears threatening to fall.
Lucas had indeed orchestrated it all! He had indeed lied and did this to Lor— her family’s company.
Technically, he’s the reason her new mother was angry at her now! The reason she had a red cheek right now!
All because of that darn bastard!
She didn’t care anymore whether he thought he was justified or not. All the anger and humiliation she had been swallowing was now eating her up alive from the inside.
The fact that the new ticket she thought she had found to even escape him was now gone too made her even more pissed.
And worst of all, Evelyn, the one new mother who had made her feel wanted like a real daughter, had just turned her back on her.
All because of Lucas!
She needed someone to be the reason for every ounce of fury in her right now and Lucas was the very one.
"I’ll confront that bastard," she said to the empty air with her voice getting stronger. "Not even tomorrow but tonight! No more hiding, no more pretending!"
She needed to find that man, ask questions, and yell if possible!
She found one of the maids in the compound, one who was blinking at her as if wondering what was getting her so worked up.
"Where’s he? Where’s Lucas?" she asked angrily.
"Uh? Mr. Lucas?" The maid repeated, clearly trying to process why the woman was standing there with wild hair late in the night. "He went out for his run, should be in the woods in the estate down there. He does that every night."
Every night? Aren’t runs supposed to be mornings? But then that man was never normal anyways.
Mira didn’t stop to reply to the maid, she didn’t even stop to think that going into the woods she wasn’t familiar with made no sense at all. She just headed straight for the tree line.
As soon as she was there, her heels immediately sank into the soft earth. She kept taking more steps, avoiding the woods and branches, but soon enough after about fifty yards, she stopped and just took the heels off with rage like they were slowing her down unnecessarily.
She continued her steps barefooted while ignoring the owl that was hooting mournfully somewhere in the distance.
Branches scratched at her arms as she pushed deeper into the woods while following what looked like a path. Not even when her blouse caught on some thorns and tore did she slow down.
She was too way into her head and she needed to let it all out right now, not later.
Now
.
But then the deeper she went, the more the woods started to change around her somehow.
The normal sounds of the night such as crickets and leaves rustling began to fade away. The silence felt so unnatural and oppressive like the woods were hiding something.
And that’s when she felt it, a prickling sensation at the back of her neck, something that tells you that you’re not alone.
Someone, no... something, was watching her.
She froze at that and even though every instinct was telling her to run, she felt like she might just be too paranoid and needed to check if she was even being pursued by anything first.
So she turned around only to see two green eyes shining at her between the trees about twenty feet behind her.
They were too high off the ground to belong to any dog.
As she watched, too paralyzed by the terror to move, a massive shape materialized from behind the bushes and her heart almost stopped.
It was a wolf.
And no, it was not like any other wolf she had ever seen in nature documentaries or anything. This one was so enormous, almost as high as a horse.
Its fur gleamed in some sort of unnatural silver-white under the moonlight that filtered through the canopy of trees.
Every rational thought or paralyzing one Mira had before was replaced by pure terror.
Now the only thing screaming in her head was Run! —
which she did.
Branches whipped her face while twigs snapped under her bare feet as she ran. She even stumbled over roots and rocks but was quick to recover quickly and push herself harder.
She could feel the steady bar of massive paws behind her getting closer and closer, yet she felt like it wasn’t exactly chasing her at all. Because with the size of that thing, it would have caught up to her so easily.
It was more like it was following her or hunting her. Like it had all the time in the world to wear her down before doing anything.
"God, it’s toying with me!" she gasped even though she didn’t dare look back.
She kept running even when she felt like she was about to faint soon enough.
And just as her legs were starting to feel like jelly, just as her vision was starting to blur from exhaustion, Mira found herself slamming into something solid and furry.
The impact even sent her flying backwards as she hit the ground hard with leaves and dirt flying up around her.
When her vision finally cleared up a bit, she looked up and saw another wolf standing directly in front of her.
This one was even larger than the first with dark fur that looked even darker in the moonlight. Its eyes shined red rather than the previous green, a red that was terrifying in a way that made her bones turn to dust.
She looked behind her just a little to see that the green-eyed wolf that had been following her too had come to a halt several paces back.
And to her amazement, it did something so weird. It lowered its head in what looked unmistakably like some sort of submission.
But Mira could not dwell on that yet because right now, she was trapped in between two wolves.
Two monstrous wolves!
She opened her mouth to scream but only a whimper came out as the larger black wolf stepped closer with its eyes fixed on her.
Then she watched in horror as some sound started. Bones cracking and grinding as the creature’s massive frame began to change.
It was so unnatural and scary, like listening to a building collapse in slow motion.
Mira tried to crawl backward but found out that her limbs wouldn’t work so she could only watch the madness that was going on in front of her right now.
The transformation seemed to take forever yet happen in an instant all at once.
And when it was over, standing before her butt naked under the moonlight was a human.
Not just any human but the same one she had stormed into the woods to find.
Lucas.
