Chapter 129: Bad Nathan!
They were still in the sterile confines of the VIP ward at the Matching Centre, and Nathan’s powerful frame loomed over Jace, his fingers clamped like a vice around the younger man’s throat. Jace’s face was turning a deep shade of purple, his eyes bulging as he clawed weakly at Nathan’s unyielding grip. The room echoed with Jace’s strangled gasps and Nathan’s low, menacing growls.
"You think you can just waltz in here and say his name?" Nathan snarled, his voice laced with possessiveness. His pheromones flooded the space, an overpowering wave that made the air feel heavy and oppressive. As an alpha, Nathan’s dominance was instinctual, but at the moment, it was fueled by raw jealousy. "Elias is mine. Mine! You don’t get to ask about him. You don’t get to think about him."
Jace’s vision blurred, spots dancing before his eyes. He hadn’t expected this. He’d slipped into the room thinking Nathan might be resting, maybe even sedated from his injuries. But Nathan was very much awake, and very much unhinged. Jace’s mind raced back to why he was here... guilt over how his family had treated Elias, worried about the gunfight at the Drago estate. He just wanted answers, but now he was fighting for breath.
Outside the door, footsteps approached. Mrs Voss, Jace’s mother, walked alongside Dr Patel, her heels clicking softly on the polished floor, with her face etched with regret today.
"I can’t believe I let things get so out of hand," she said, her voice low and trembling slightly. "Sending Elias away like that... it was cruel. I was just so angry, so protective of Jace after everything. But now, I wish I could take it back. I want to apologise to him, but how? He’s gone, and I don’t even know where to start."
Dr Patel just nodded sympathetically. He had seen enough family dramas in his career to know regret was a common visitor in these halls.
"Mrs Voss, Elias wasn’t hurt in the incident at the Drago estate. It was just Nathan Caldwell who took the brunt of it... a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He’s recovering, but he’s... volatile right now."
Mrs Voss let out a small sigh of relief, her hand fluttering to her necklace. "Thank goodness for that. At least Elias is safe." She paused, glancing toward the door. "Are you sure Nathan’s up for visitors? I wasn’t planning to see him, really. I just... well, I was coming back from the company and thought I’d check in, maybe update him on some matters. But if it’s not a good time..."
Dr Patel smiled faintly. "He’s stable enough. Let’s see." He pushed the door open, and immediately, a wall of pheromones hit them like a tidal wave. Mrs Voss gasped, covering her nose with her sleeve, her eyes watering. She stumbled back a step, the intensity making her head spin. It was alpha dominance at its peak... aggressive, territorial. But then her gaze sharpened, piercing through the haze, and she saw it: Nathan straddling her son on the floor, hands around Jace’s neck.
"Jace!" she cried out, horror flooding her features. She lunged forward instinctively, but the pheromones pushed her back like an invisible force field. Her heart pounded in her chest, a mother’s panic rising. "Oh my God, stop! Let him go!" She turned to Dr Patel, her voice breaking. "Do something! Save my son! Please!"
Dr Patel’s face paled, but as a beta, he was less affected by the pheromones. He fumbled for his phone, dialling security with shaking hands. "Security, VIP ward, room 12... emergency!" But even as he spoke, doubt crept in. Security guards were mostly betas or omegas; what could they do against an enraged alpha like Nathan? He groaned in frustration, pocketing the phone and stepping into the room. "Nathan, calm down! This isn’t what you want to do. Let him go!"
Jace had gone limp, his eyes fluttering shut, unconscious from the lack of oxygen. Nathan didn’t even glance at Dr Patel, his focus solely on the intruder who dared mention Elias. Dr Patel scanned the room desperately, spotting a medical cart nearby. He grabbed a syringe and a vial of sedative... something strong enough to calm a patient in distress. His hands were steady from years of practice as he drew the liquid and approached. "Nathan, I’m warning you..."
With a swift motion, he jabbed the needle into Nathan’s arm. Nathan roared, shoving Dr Patel back hard enough to send him stumbling into the wall. But as Nathan turned back to Jace, the sedative kicked in fast. His grip loosened, his body swaying.
"What... what did you do?" he slurred, releasing Jace’s neck entirely as he collapsed to the floor, clutching his head.
Dr Patel rubbed his bruised shoulder, breathing heavily. "I had to stop you. Please, calm down now. It’s over."
.
.
A few minutes later, the room had transformed into a makeshift triage area. Nathan sat on the edge of his bed, still groggy but coherent, his pheromones subdued by the drug. Jace lay on the sofa, pale but breathing, as another doctor... a young resident... checked his vitals. Mrs Voss hovered over her son, her hands trembling as she brushed his hair back. "Is he going to be okay? Please, tell me he’s alright."
The resident nodded, listening to Jace’s heartbeat with a stethoscope.
"He’s got some bruising on his neck, and he’ll have a sore throat for a few days. Possible mild concussion from the struggle, but his oxygen levels are stabilising. He should wake up in a few minutes, maybe an hour at most. Just keep him resting."
Mrs Voss exhaled deeply, placing a hand on her chest as if to steady her racing heart.
"Thank you. Oh, thank God." She turned to Dr Patel, her eyes narrowing with a mix of gratitude and anger. "Ask him... ask Caldwell what my son did to deserve this. What could Jace possibly have done?"
Dr Patel glanced at Nathan, who was staring at the floor, then back at Mrs Voss.
"I already did. It was because Jace mentioned Elias’s name."
She shrugged, confusion etching her features. "What’s wrong with that? Elias lived with us for a while. Jace was just concerned, I’m sure."
Dr Patel stepped closer, lowering his voice.
"Mrs Voss, please don’t pursue this. As long as your son’s alive, let it go. Nathan’s... protective. It’s not worth escalating."
But she shook her head firmly, her maternal instincts overriding caution.
"No, I will pursue it. What if we’d arrived later? What if my son were dead? This can’t just slide."
Dr Patel sighed, rubbing his temples.
"I’m sorry. On behalf of Mr Caldwell, I apologise. He’s under a lot of stress from his injury."
Suddenly, Nathan’s voice cut through the room, sharp and commanding. "Dr Patel, get these people out of my room. Now."
Dr Patel nodded quickly, gesturing to the resident. "Let’s get a stretcher for Jace." He looked at Mrs Voss, who was fuming, her cheeks flushed. She bit her lip, holding back words she knew could cost her family dearly. The Caldwells were powerful and untouchable in ways the Vosses could only dream of. Slapping Nathan would be suicide for their business ties.
