Chapter 140: Lies Or Truth?
Viktor had spent hours trying to locate the villa where Camilla was staying. It was on the outskirts, a modest place compared to the grandeur he’d expected... low-key, hidden behind tall hedges and a simple gate.
He’d been silent the whole drive, his mind racing with the implications of wondering what Camilla had gotten herself into. After witnessing that man with his brain blown, he knew she had gotten herself into trouble one way or the other.
Nico stood in front of the car, checking his phone for updates from the scouts.
"Boss, I’ve gotten something. The place looks quiet. There are no visible guards outside. It could be a trap, but our guys say it’s clear."
Viktor nodded curtly, his jaw set.
"Well, it doesn’t matter if there are guards or not. Surround it anyway."
The car pulled up a short distance away, as the engine stopped. The men in the cars behind them spilt out, shadows moving efficiently in the twilight. Viktor cocked his gun, the familiar click steadying his nerves. "Nico, with me. The rest... surround the building. Make sure no one gets out. If you see anyone unfamiliar... Kill them."
Nico relayed the order quietly into his radio, and the team fanned out, positioning themselves around the villa’s perimeter... some at the back, others at the sides, weapons ready but hidden. Viktor approached the front door, Nico and two trusted men flanking him. The entrance was unlocked, which set off alarms in Viktor’s head. He signalled, and Nico pushed the door open slowly, gun drawn.
"It’s really empty..." Viktor frowned.
The living room was pitch-black; not a sound was inside. Nico whispered, "Something’s definitely up. An empty building like this? With no guards? I’m sure it’s a prank."
Viktor stepped in, his eyes adjusting to the dark. "Prank or not, keep sharp."
"Yes, sir!"
Nico reached for his flashlight, but before he could flick it on, two sharp claps echoed through the room. The lights snapped on, bright and sudden, illuminating the space. Everyone whirled, guns up, pointing at the figure standing calmly in the centre of the room.
Camilla Rossi smiled, spreading her arms wide in a mock welcome. She was dressed casually, in jeans and a blouse, her hair loose, but her eyes held that same calculating glint Viktor remembered.
"Welcome, Viktor. Oh, I’m so happy you came to look for me."
"It’s you..."
Viktor lowered his gun slightly, signalling his men to do the same. They complied, but stayed alert, fingers near triggers.
"Cut the act, Camilla. You’re the one who sent your men after me first. What the hell are you after?"
Camilla smirked, lowering her arms.
"Me? Send anyone? No, Viktor. I was planning to head to your house myself, actually. But I changed my mind. Since I figured you’d come to me eventually."
He stepped closer, his voice low and dangerous. "Figured I’d come to you? Don’t lie to me. The man we caught... he confessed to me and said you sent him to spy. And then he mentioned someone backing you. Before he could say the name, his brain exploded. Literally."
"I see... It must have been traumatic."
Camilla’s expression shifted to one of amusement. She sauntered over to a nearby armchair and sat down gracefully, crossing her legs. She gestured to the couch opposite her.
"Sit, Viktor. Let’s talk like adults."
He remained standing, with his arms crossed.
"I’m good. I’d rather stand here since I can’t bring myself to trust you."
"Sure. Suit yourself." She smiled.
"So tell me... Who the hell is he? The backer that was mentioned."
She leaned back, fiddling with a ring on her finger.
"Straight to business, as always. Fine, I’ll tell you everything. You see... I already gave up on you and the kids. It should be obvious since I didn’t show myself in front of you for over two years. All I wanted was a successful campaign... run for office, make a name for myself without the Drago shadow. But then I met this man. He’s ready to back me fully for the election."
Viktor’s eyes narrowed.
"And? What’s the catch?"
Camilla chuckled softly. "That’s what I thought too. I figured he’d want my body, like the others. But no, I was wrong. All he asked was for me to go back to you. Pretend I want the children back, stir things up."
Viktor felt a chill.
"Go back to me? Our relationship was secret... because of the contract. How does he know?"
She shrugged. "He knew everything, Viktor. That man knew about the accident, the deal we made, the twins. All of it. I pretended not to know at first. I pretended I had no idea what he was talking about, but he had details and proof. It was creepy."
Viktor paced a step, his mind whirring. "So... because of the proof, you agreed?"
Camilla’s smile faded a bit.
"I wanted to turn him down and refuse the money. I didn’t want him to support me for the election again. When I tried to leave, his men... they grabbed me, forced something inside." She parted the collar of her blouse slightly, revealing a small scar on her chest. Under the skin, a red light beeped faintly.
Viktor’s stomach twisted. He averted his eyes at first, thinking she was going to undress and try to do whatever she wanted to him but then he looked closer.
"What is that?"
"The same thing that blew up in that man’s head," she said quietly. "He planted right here, near my heart. One wrong word about him, and boom... I’m gone."
He sighed heavily, holstering his gun behind his back.
"Why didn’t you tell me sooner?"
Camilla glanced around, lowering her voice.
"You wouldn’t trust me. And also, the men around me? Most are his, not mine. I was trying to get rid of them first, then reach out. But you found me before I could."
"I see..." Viktor rubbed his temple as he exhaled again. "Do you have a plan?"
She fiddled with her hands, looking almost vulnerable for a moment.
"Well, I just want us to do what he wants for now. I go back to you, act like I want the kids, you take me back in and I pretend to be your woman. We’ll draw him out, find out who he is and what he really wants."
He muttered to himself, staring at the floor.
"This is hard. I can’t imagine doing this. I can’t just bring you back into our lives."
"What’s wrong with that? I’m not some homewrecker or..." Camilla folded her arms, leaning forward. "Are you perhaps worried about your little Elias Kane?"
Viktor’s head snapped up, frowning. "How do you even know about Elias?"
She waved a hand dismissively.
"A little background check. Word gets around. He’s a cute kid... I can’t believe someone like that is your type."
He pointed at her warningly.
"Don’t lay a hand on him. Or mention him again."
Camilla smirked. "Relax. I’m not interested in that. And I won’t say a word about the truth... the kids, the accident. That’s your mess."
Viktor shook his head. "I could tell Elias about the twins being yours. But not the accident. The couple you hit... they were his parents."
She froze, her face paling as she turned away. "I promise. I... won’t breathe a word."
He stood up straighter, adjusting his shirt.
"Fine. Stay calm. I’ll send a message when it’s time for you to move in."
She nodded, standing to escort him to the door. "Thank you, Viktor. I promise I won’t betray you."
He paused at the threshold. "You better not. I’d end your life before you even think about it."
She smiled faintly. "I’ll be waiting."
Viktor didn’t turn back, striding out with Nico and the men. As the door closed behind them, a figure emerged from the shadows... a man leaning on a walking stick, his face obscured in the dim light. Camilla turned to him, her voice steady. "I did what you asked. Are you happy now?"
"Happy? I won’t be happy until I get my puppet back," He smirked slowly. "But... you did a good job. I’m sure you won’t disappoint me. No... You can never disappoint me." He laughed as he walked away.
Camilla swallowed hard and placed a hand on her chest.
"I’m sorry Viktor. I don’t want to die yet. I’m not ready to die yet... I hope you’ll forgive me."
.
The drive back was tense, Viktor staring out the window as Nico was on the steering.
"Boss, what was that about? She seemed... off."
Viktor exhaled.
"I’m sure she’s being forced. Someone implanted that thing in her chest... The person could also make her say those words to me. She’s just being obedient because she doesn’t wish to die. That means, the bomb in her chest is real. She’s playing along to draw out the backer for both of us."
Nico whistled low. "And you’re trusting her?"
"I have no choice. But if she steps wrong..." Viktor trailed off, his fist clenching.
"I understand, Boss. You’ll have to tell the boys about their mother then."
"The boys might be easy but Elias... Elias said he’ll shoot me if I betray him. I don’t mind dying in his hands."
Nico stared at Viktor through the front view mirror.
"I guess I’ll prepare a bulletproof vest, then."
