Chapter 151

Chapter 151: Jealous Viktor! 1
Elias was finally done with dinner. He didn’t prepare it alone; Jace had been right there with him the whole time, helping chop the onions, stir the sauce for the pasta, and even flip the grilled vegetables on the stove.
The kitchen had been alive with the sizzle of food cooking and their light conversation, making the task feel less like a chore and more like hanging out with a friend. Jace had surprised Elias with how handy he was... measuring ingredients without needing much direction and even suggesting a dash of garlic to boost the flavour.
Now, they were arranging the table together in the dining room, the rich aroma of the meal... creamy pasta with herbs, grilled veggies, and a side of bread... wafting through the safe house, making everyone’s stomachs growl in anticipation. The room was spacious but cosy, with a long wooden table that could seat the whole family, and fresh flowers in a vase at the centre that Lila had picked earlier.
Elias collected the last napkin from Jace’s hand, their fingers brushing briefly in the exchange. He laid it neatly on the table beside one of the plates, straightening it with a quick pat. "Thanks for the help, man. I couldn’t have done it this fast without you."
Jace nodded, but his eyes lingered on Elias a second too long, taking in the way his hair fell slightly over his forehead and the easy smile on his face. Before he could look away, he noticed Elias’s collar was twisted slightly from all the moving around in the kitchen, one side flipped up awkwardly. Without thinking, Jace reached out and fixed it, his fingers grazing Elias’s neck lightly as he smoothed the fabric down. "It was crooked," he said, his voice a bit softer than intended, a hint of nervousness creeping in.
Elias smiled again, completely unbothered by the gesture, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Thanks, Jace." He stepped back to admire the table setup, hands on his hips, surveying the plates, utensils, and napkins all in place. "Looks good now. Everyone should be hungry by this point... the twins have been running around all day."
Jace nodded, but he still couldn’t take his eyes off Elias. The way Elias moved with that effortless confidence, the small smile that lingered on his lips... it all brought back memories when Jace had first realised his feelings. Sitting in class, stealing glances, or hanging out after school. He felt a pang in his chest, a mix of nostalgia and regret that made his throat tighten.
Why had he avoided Elias for so long?
The guilt from that day at his house had kept him away, but now, being here, it all felt like a mistake. And with time ticking down on his thirty minutes, he wished he could freeze the moment just a little longer.
They didn’t know that Ethan and Viktor were watching both of them from the doorway, hidden just out of sight in the hallway. It had started innocently enough—Ethan and Viktor wrapping up their meeting in the office, discussing the final details of the war strategy, and heading downstairs for dinner. But they’d paused when they caught sight of the scene in the dining room: Elias taking the napkin from Jace, their hands touching briefly, and then Jace fixing the collar with that lingering, almost tender look on his face. Ethan peeped at Viktor out of the corner of his eye and saw the frown deepening on his face, his jaw tightening like he was biting back words. The air felt thicker suddenly, charged with unspoken tension. Ethan cleared his throat loudly to get Jace’s attention, breaking the moment before it stretched too far.
Jace lifted his head quickly, spotting Viktor and Ethan standing there. His face paled a bit, the colour draining as he realised they’d been watching. He slowly stepped away from Elias, putting some deliberate distance between them to avoid any misunderstanding.
"Uh... Ethan, are we leaving now?" he asked, his voice a little shaky, trying to sound casual but failing.
Elias heard the voices and turned around, seeing Viktor and Ethan in the doorway. He greeted Ethan with a warm smile, his eyes lighting up a bit. "Hey, Ethan. How’s it going?"
Ethan smiled back, stepping into the room fully to ease the awkwardness.
"Good, good. How about you? You look like you’ve been busy in there... smells amazing."
Elias nodded, still smiling as he gestured to the table.
"Yeah, we just finished dinner. I’m fine, thanks." He completely ignored Viktor, not even glancing his way, his focus staying on Ethan. He turned back to Ethan. "Are you gonna stay for dinner? It’s ready. I made plenty for everyone. A lot of extra."
Ethan looked at Viktor, noticing the frown on his face at being ignored. Viktor’s arms were crossed, his expression darkening slightly, a muscle twitching in his jaw. Ethan scratched his head, chuckling awkwardly to defuse the situation.
"Uh, I think we have to head out with my brother here. It’s a long drive back, and we don’t want to get caught out too late."
Elias tilted his head, genuinely confused. "Why? It’s already getting dark... if you head home now, you’ll get there after midnight. It’s not safe, especially with the war going on and the curfew in some areas. Roads are sketchy at night."
Ethan hesitated, glancing at Viktor again for a cue. "We’ll find a hotel nearby. We definitely don’t want to impose on you guys."
Elias waved that off with a laugh. "Impose? Come on, there are tons of rooms in the safe house. You could stay the night and leave in the morning. Much safer that way. The twins would love having more people around too... they’re always up for company."
Ethan looked at Viktor, who was still glaring at Elias for talking so freely without acknowledging him. The tension was thick, hanging in the air like an unspoken challenge. Ethan rubbed the back of his neck, laughing nervously.
"That sounds like a bad idea. We don’t want to overstay our welcome or anything."
