Chapter 78: Before The Second Matching Test! 2
Mrs Voss arrived home from her short business-related outing. Her husband had other things to do, so she came alone. The butler took her bag in, and the first person she saw in the dining area was Ethan. He was busy as always, staring at his laptop.
She turned to the butler, with a small smile.
"Take the bag to the room and tell the chef to prepare something light for dinner. It’s late already, so I can’t eat much,"
"Understood, ma’am,". He lowered his head and walked away with Mrs Voss’s bag. She walked her son as she tied her hair into a rough ponytail.
"Is everything alright, Ethan?" She asked and he lifted his head, shocked to see his mother. "You seem quite busy,"
"It’s nothing, Mother. I couldn’t finish up the work during the day, so I had to finish it before morning," he said.
She pulled a high chair close to him and sat down. She could see the chef already getting busy in the kitchen but the chef was none of her concern.
"What were you busy with? Did you have a date with a girl?"
He paused and looked at his mother.
"It’s not a date, but I did spend my time taking care of a little girl,"
"Huh?" Mrs Voss furrowed her brows, trying to understand what her son was saying. She knew Ethan too well. He was the kind of child who wanted nothing to do with anyone. He hated being in a relationship because it would have him committed to something other than work.
He loved to work. He didn’t mind working all his life and that’s why his parents are worried about him. They told him to build his own family before they could consider him their heir. If not, he’ll lose his right to become the next owner of the Voss fortune.
It has been difficult for him to find someone. A man, a woman. Anybody. Maybe because of the grumpy expression on his face, it could easily startle someone.
"So, whose kid were you taking care of?" She asked, tilting her head playing.
Ethan took a pause from his laptop and looked in the direction of Lila’s room.
"Elias’s little sister. She’s awake,"
Mrs Voss froze when she heard that. No, she hoped what she had heard was a mistake or a slip of the tongue.
"Are you playing a prank on me?"
"Do I look like someone who would play pranks, mother?" Ethan asked.
Mrs Voss looked at her son and shook her head. There’s no way he could have pulled up a prank like that. She then leaned forward and placed a hand on her son’s knee.
"So, you’re telling me that Lila Kane is finally conscious,"
"Yes, she is. Why aren’t you happy? It’s good news. Elias even cried when he saw her," Ethan couldn’t understand the expression on his mother’s face. A normal person was supposed to be happy but his mother wasn’t showing any particular expression. She didn’t look sad, she didn’t look happy. Maybe, disappointed.
"Elias is back? With Jace?" She asked and Ethan just nodded, tired of speaking already.
She bit her thumb and then her bottom lip. Ethan watched her carefully and then asked...
"Mother, were you thinking of using Lila to tie Elias to our family?" He asked, with his eyes glued on her. She flinched, and Ethan knew he had guessed right.
He heard that the matching result between his brother and Elias was low. That means, Elias has to find someone. But his mother was busy trying to find a way to make sure Elias didn’t leave the Voss family.
Of course, Mrs Voss’ first option was to use Elias unconscious sister, but now that she was awake, it was impossible.
"At this rate, he’ll leave the house soon. I don’t want him to leave yet, Ethan. What do I do?"
"Why?" He asked nonchalantly.
"He’s a dominant Omega and we can’t let him slip through our..." She paused when she realised she had said what she wasn’t supposed to say. Ethan was also puzzled. He slammed his laptop closed and stood up from the chair.
"I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that, mother. This conversation never happened," he turned to leave but she followed him.
"Ethan, you must do a test with Elias. You’re a strong alpha and I’m sure the result would be more than fifty," she said.
"I don’t want anything to do with Elias, mother. Elias is already connected to so many people, and I don’t want to be part of them." he walked away before his mother could say another word. She touched her head and went back to her seat to wait for dinner.
She was already losing her appetite but her stomach was still growling.
"Maybe, I should adopt Elias. Wouldn’t it be weird? I don’t want him to find out my reason for doing so," she rubbed her chin. "If Elias can’t be my son-in-law, he could at least, be my son,"
She clenched her fist and smiled at her idea. It could definitely work. She nodded with a smile on her face as the chef finally brought her meal.
.
.
The next morning, Elias was no longer in his room. He wasn’t with his sister either. He could be seen in the kitchen, making a quick breakfast. Though the chef was there, making a general breakfast for everyone, Elias was whipping something up for his sister. She used to enjoy his breakfast, even when their parents were alive.
He had gotten better, so he wanted to show it to her.
"You cook well, I’m impressed," the chef even gave him a thumbs up.
"Thank you," he said, flustered. His cheek and neck had reddened, so he had nothing to say.
By the time he was pouring the syrup on the pancakes. Leo stepped out, bare-chested. His abs were exposed and a dragon tattoo on the side of his shoulder. He was perceiving the sweet aroma of pancakes while he was at the gym and he came to have a taste.
He saw them in front of Elias.
"Oh-ho! Is that for us?" Leo asked, already wiping his sweaty hands to touch the pancakes. Elias already positioned the fork in his hand like he wanted to stab someone.
"Of could, touch it and lose three fingers. Your choice," he said with a cold eye and cruel smile. Leo withdrew his hand before even stretching it.
"My bad. They look and smell great. Are they for Jace? Are you giving him breakfast in bed? Are you two a thing now?" Leo asked too many questions and Elias refused to answer. He just placed the plate on a tray together with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. He ignored Leo and walked to Lila’s room. Leo watched him leave as he stretched his head, awkwardly.
"That isn’t the way to Jace’s room," he muttered to himself but the family chef heard him.
"Haha! Young master Leo, it’s not for young master Jace. It’s for his sister,"
"Sister?" Leo asked himself.
He heard about her. She was unconscious when he went to peek at the second guest at the house.
"I see... So she’s already awake. Cute," he smirked and turned to the chef. "What are you making?"
"Toast and cheese, with scrambled egg..."
Leo stretched his hand to stop him before he completed his breakfast menu.
"Scratch that. I want pancakes for breakfast. Make it tasty,"
"Uh... Yes, young master," he watched Leo head back to the gym and he shook his head.
"What kind of family is this?" He asked himself.
.
Meanwhile,. Elias watched his sister eat the pancakes he made. She had a bath and wore one of the dresses he brought from home the other day. They were a bit small for her, which means he had to buy some new dresses for her.
"It tastes good, brother. You’ve become a professional,"
"You should eat and I’ll take you to the hospital for a test,"
"Okay, but where’s your breakfast?" She asked.
"I already ate while making the pancakes," he said, rubbing his stomach. Lila didn’t want to believe him but she did anyway.
Elias didn’t really eat anything. In fact, he hadn’t eaten anything since he returned from the field trip yesterday. He didn’t know maybe it’s because he was nervous to get tested today with a stranger, but he didn’t feel hungry at all.
He stared at his phone and the message that Dr Patel sent to him this morning. The schedule for today’s test. He had to be at the hospital around 12pm for the test.
"I’m done," he said, staring at his sister, who had emptied her plate. He smiled and helped her down.
"Let’s go," he said to her. Together, they left the house and as soon as they got out, Lila closed her eyes because of how bright it was. She hadn’t seen the sunlight in three years.
"It’s too bright," she complained. He smirked at her.
"I thought you’d have forgotten how to walk after so long,"
"What? I’m not a child. I’m just ten,"
"Of course, you are. You’ll be eleven in a few weeks, right?"
"Ah... That’s true," she said, lowering her head. "I hope I’ll be able to celebrate my birthday well this year,"
"Nothing will happen to you again, Lila. I’ll make sure of that," he said, patting her head. She smiled, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere until, Elias held her hand.
"Anyway, we’ll have to work five minutes before we reach the gate. So get ready..."
"Eh! No way!" She cried.
