Chapter 713: Managing the Aftermath
"Lin, you left me a big surprise, you know that?"
As Yezi questioned the lone officer in front of him, all of the soldiers nearby watching the questioning unfold could see the tension.
"General, I only did what I needed to do." The officer answered back as he looked him right in the eyes with no fear.
"Did that include launching a probing attack into Wuzhou?"
"You taught me, sir! Preemptive strike is better than being sitting ducks. The best defense is offense——"
"Enough bullshit, Major. Do you know how lucky you are that the backup Division happened to be a few miles away?"
The officer fell into silence, standing there as he waited for Yezi to finish scolding him for his mistake.
"You know how bad you make us look? Using missiles that we can never make up for? All because of your impatience?"
"General I——"
"Did I let you talk, Major Lan?"
"No, sir."
"Then shut up and let me fucking talk. I’m tired of your low-entry officer thinking they have the best ideas in the world.
What makes you all think you can override superior command? Why didn’t a single one of your soldiers in your regiment your stupid ass mistake?"
Despite the continuous insult from Yezi, all of the soldiers let out a sigh of disappointment as it became clear that the officer wasn’t going to face real punishment.
"Next time I catch anyone disobeying the original plan, I’ll let them learn the goddamn true meaning of act first and later."
As Yezi pulled out his pistol and pointed it right at his head, Major Lan didn’t look scared a single bit as he stared right back at the dark barrel.
"Do you hear me? I don’t want this to happen again. Answer me if you understand what order means."
"Yes, sir."
"Say it louder."
"Yes, sir!"
"What are you all looking at? Go back to your duty."
Crowds of soldier quickly dispersed from the two as they headed back to their camps, leaving the two to stand across from each other.
"Lan Xianlin, you really left me in a pickle, you know that?" Yezi murmured as all the anger instantly disappeared from his face.
"Sorry, Commander... I didn’t intend to waste the missiles like that." Major Lan replied as he bowed in apology.
"You didn’t waste the missiles. Next time, just send a radio call to me at the very least... I don’t like surprises."
"Yes, sir."
As Major Lan followed Yezi into an HQ tent, several high-ranking officers were already inside, waiting with a sandbox map in front of them.
"Colonel Mingxu, sorry for the trouble."
Mingxu didn’t respond to Lan’s apology. Instead, he looked over to Yezi as he raised his question.
"General Yezi, is the punishment over?"
"It is as over as it could be. Unless you want to teach all those low-rank officers a lesson yourself."
With Yezi walking back all the way to the middle, all of them looked over to him with respect as they waited for him to continue.
"Colonel Ningjing and Colonel Tan Pi, have your soldiers finish scouting out the forests?"
Both of them shook their head, with Ningjing being the one pointing over to a large forest right next to the city of Zhaoqing.
"There are just too many areas that the other mutant could be at... We can’t really check every single possible route that’s off the main road."
"Just keep scouting it. I don’t want to hear the news of a giant mutant sneaking past us and making it to Foshan by next week."
They both nodded their head, accepting Yezi’s order as he turned over to the other two colonels who hadn’t been called yet in the tent.
"Tan Pi and Bai Bing, can you two make sure no zombies sneak through the southern flank? I want Yanfu’s direction to be safe."
"We have already set up several checkpoints in that area. We can even resume the mission in Yanfu——"
Bai Bing’s suggestion was instantly shut down as Yezi shook his head, rejecting her argument as he looked back at the map.
"I want to concentrate our resources on holding Zhaoqing for now. We’re not going to expand until this mutant threat is taken care of."
"Yes, sir..."
Both Bai Bing and Tan Pi looked a little disappointed, but neither of them spoke up about it as Yezi turned over to the person right across from him.
"Now... Major Lan, do you mind explaining to all of us how the battle went down?" Yezi asked as all the colonels looked a little intrigued.
"Um... I’ll try my best."
---
It was still late at night when the first scouting team ed something was a little off in one of the scouting missions in the east.
As I led a small team to check it out, we were a little shocked to see a giant footprint in the middle of the concrete road.
More concerningly, we were able to see a massive number of trees on the side of the road that were crushed.
All of them seem to be coming from Wuzhou’s direction. To investigate this a little further, another scouting team was sent to check it out.
What came back shocked me. It was a of even more footsteps. The same sizes of footstep were put in a way that indicated more than one.
I instantly thought of ing it. But remembering the general was still on his way to Yanfu, I decided to hold on to the news for now.
There wasn’t any concrete evidence yet. It was just footprints, and that’s it. We didn’t even know where they were exactly...
Until a day later.
We found a giant mutant hanging around the outskirts of Wuzhou. It was just a one-minute drive from the entrance of the city.
It was destroying all the buildings near it. Concrete walls made no difference as they all collasped onto the floor.
The thought of it destroying all of our progress flashes in our heads. We thought we needed to do something before it moved on to another city.
That’s when we develop a plan—an idea to lure the zombie near a chokehold between Fengkai and Wuzhou.
The chokehold was a short road with small hills on one side and a river on the other. It was a perfect road with only two directions: forward and backward.
Guns were set. Bombs were set. We had everything prepared to kill the zombie in a single evening.
I know the plan was a little risky. But waiting longer could mean that the mutant goes somewhere else that we would lose sight of.
We didn’t want to let this chance slip away. It was the only chance we were given to pick the fight on our own turf.
The plan was underway. A few car was sent, honking their horns to the max to lure out the mutant from Wuzhou.
It was dumb enough to follow, which made us even more confident. It wasn’t one of those zombies who had learn smart enough to avoid baits.
As the giant mutant chased further and further, it soon entered our set plan. All of the soldiers who had been waiting on the hills fired their guns.
The bombs on the road were all detonated. All of the RPGs were fired. Grenades were thrown, and artillery was fired.
We wanted to make sure it was fully dead. We wanted to concentrate all of our firepower to make sure it penetrated.
Unfortunately, it didn’t. The mutant held strong despite all the firepower that we unloaded at the zombie.
Minor damage. No, barely any damage was done. The mutant only had a few scratches that made it leak a very small amount of blood.
At that moment, we knew we had fucked up. Fortunately, we already had a backup plan in case this did happen.
Everyone immediately dispersed and hid themsleve, leaving the giant mutant with no direction to chase other than to head either forward or backward.
We were really hoping it would head back to Wuzhou... But it chose to head forward towards the town of Fengkai County that we were holding.
There were two choices in front of me. I was either to run away, or I was to continue hiding and let it destroy the small town.
I chose the latter. There was no way for us to fight back when none of our conventional weapons worked.
Fortunately, at the very end. As the mutants approached closer and closer to the town, the reinforcement we called came in time.
The missiles landed right on its head, causing one of the biggest explosions all of us had ever seen.
Yet, the giant mutant was still able to run away, albeit with a massive wound as it ran back towards where it came from.
We initially thought to give chase, but Colonel Mingxu had finally caught up to our shenanigans as our operation was put on hold.
Only after giving him an explanation did he resume letting us chase after it. By then, it was too late as we lost track of the mutant.
