Chapter 26: Chapter 25: Promise
He removed Ryzel’s shoes, socks, and jacket before covering him with a blanket.
He looked at Ryzel’s sleeping face and couldn’t help but stare at him.
Ryzel did become more gorgeous as he grew older.
Layton Lewis saw Ryzel for the first time when Ryzel was eight. When Ryzel approached him, all of the sounds he could hear quieted down.
All sentinels have heightened senses, which allows them to hear sounds that normal people cannot, which is useful on the battlefield but can be problematic in their daily lives.
They do learn how to block their senses for a short distance, which is beneficial for low-level sentinels. However, high-level sentinels with greater sensitivity can still hear the sounds of everything around them.
They all learned how to tolerate them because, as soon as they awakened as a high-level sentinel, there were no quiet moments for them. Especially for Layton Lewis, who awakened as an SS-level sentinel.
Most people who abruptly awaken as high-level sentinels are unable to withstand all of the noise they are exposed to on a daily basis, which is why they are more susceptible to mania when they first awaken. As they grew older, their tolerance also increased.
Layton Lewis awakened as a sentinel when he was nine years old, so he was used to the noise he could hear every day. He doesn’t even remember what quietness is like.
As soon as the child was one meter away from him, his surroundings suddenly grew quiet.
He was stunned when he realized he could no longer hear the sounds he was accustomed to hearing every day.
His mind cleared up immediately, as if it had been relieved of a burden.
He realized right away that the child in front of him would become a guide in the future and had high compatibility with him.
Layton Lewis knew that only guides and sentinels who have a high matching rate of over ninety percent can the sentinel experience a soothing effect, even if they aren’t their partners.
"Hello, big brother, my name is Ryzel. What’s your name? the child asked, smiling brightly.
"I’m Layton."
"Big brother Layton, I saw you defeating my father.
Are you more powerful than my father? I want to be more powerful than my father!
Can you teach me how to be more powerful?"
At that time, he looked at the young Ryzel, who might become his guide in the future, and thought he needed to protect this beautiful child so that he could grow up freely.
Ryzel’s father, General Carl, also noticed his shock when he met the young Ryzel, so he also asked Layton Lewis about it after his wife and child went out.
Layton Lewis didn’t hide what he felt; he directly said that Ryzel would surely awaken as a guide, and they have a high matching rate.
"I see. I won’t stop you from getting closer to my child.
Once he becomes an adult, he can decide on his own if he wants to be your partner or be with others.
I know that if what you said is correct, then your matching rate should be higher than ninety percent. He could only be the guide with the highest matching rate with you.
But promise me that if that child decides to be with others, don’t disturb him anymore.
I can’t even engage you with him because that child would cry as soon as he heard he would be engaged to someone, and he even dreams to be a sentinel stronger than me.
I hope that he can grow up freely without being bound to others. He would then decide what to do once he became an adult."
"I promise to protect him so that he can grow up freely; I will wait until he can decide on his own before asking anything; and I also promise not to disturb his life once he chooses other people."
Layton Lewis didn’t forget his promise.
When Ryzel’s parents died on the battlefield, he was also fighting on the frontlines, so he could only send someone to watch over Ryzel.
He couldn’t meddle with family matters such as his inheritance even if he wanted to, so he just assigned secret guards for his protection.
The guards protected Ryzel from poisoning or other deliberate accidents other people were planning. It also lessened after his relatives realized that someone was protecting Ryzel.
They should have thought it might be some of the remnants of General Carl’s subordinate, so they no longer messed with Ryzel’s life and only did a lot of petty tricks.
He never met Ryzel directly, as he was always busy fighting on the frontlines, but he still regularly received a every month about Ryzel’s life in the Capital Star.
He only saw Ryzel again when he was already sixteen years old, when he visited the army with Luke’s brother.
He became more beautiful as he grew up, but even though he was already an adult, he thought Ryzel was still too young to decide his life partner.
But two years ago, he suddenly heard that Ryzel had become Dwight’s boyfriend.
He was aware that Dwight had grown close to Ryzel, but he ignored it because he assumed he was simply trying to repay Ryzel’s parents for their assistance. He didn’t expect them to be in a relationship afterwards.
He didn’t think that Ryzel had a large effect on him. He didn’t know when his feelings for Ryzel became deep enough because he merely kept doing what he promised when Ryzel was a child.
He knew that initially, all he wanted was to protect Ryzel. He had no idea when his feelings for Ryzel shifted, and he only understood it after discovering that Ryzel was already in a relationship.
He followed his promise to Ryzel’s father. Knowing that Ryzel was already in a relationship, he withdrew all the guards that he assigned to him, knowing that he already had someone who could protect him. He also stopped receiving updates about Ryzel.
