Chapter 20: Chapter 20- To the Dungeon
Dante fixed his shoes. He then went to the table and grabbed a huge backpack he made. Inside were stuffed with dried foods and clothes.
He also grabbed the water bottle and placed it on his side. He then walked toward the wall and touched his axe. He smiled.
He won’t bring the axe to the dungeon. It was too large for this kind of stuff. It would hinder his ways.
And he had to carry many things, an extra huge axe meant bringing down his combat speed.
He wasn’t worried about his fighting capability. Even without the huge axe he still had a few small axes.
They were called Hurlbat in the system shop. They are a small axe, made for throwing. Each one cost him about 500 points. He had to borrow some from his friends.
He hung three hurbats on his belt, ready to equip at any moment.
He then checked himself in the mirror for the final time before stepping out from the building. He had been staying in this building for a week.
The surroundings were now covered by Thomas’s walls.
He walked to the central area and saw Julius and Thomas waiting. They all wore the same backpack as him, with their respective weapons.
Julius had a longsword, he upgraded. With his eyes, he saw a rune engraved into the sword.
Thomas decided to bring weapons for the first time. Because of Dante’s advice, he decided to focus on close range attack.
That was why he brought a pair of gauntlets. Dante didn’t know the function but his eyes told that it was no joke.
"Okay. Ready guys?" Dante said.
Thomas made a noise with his gauntlets and smiled. "Always."
Julius laughed and nodded. "We have been here for a whole month."
Dante nodded. He didn’t even know how fast the time passed.
Thomas shook his head and led the group to the dungeon. Before they left the village, Thomas closed off all the walls.
They didn’t want any monsters hanging inside their building.
Soon, they arrived in front of the dungeon.
Dante looked at his two friends and nodded.
"Thomas, you go first. I will follow." Dante said.
Thomas nodded and stepped into the dungeon. Instantly, light flashed and he vanished.
Dante was dumbfounded. He thought they had to travel into the entrance. His eyes showed nothing about Thomas. It was as if the big buy fell into another universe.
He turned around and asked Julius. "Any feeling of space?"
Julius nodded. "Plenty but I don’t sense it being dangerous."
"Okay."
Dante stepped forward and greeted the system notification.
[Unconquered dungeon detected.]
[Requirements checking.]
[Requirements meet.]
[Do you wish to enter?]
Dante naturally selected yes. Light consumed his entire body and he found himself standing in a new surroundings.
He immediately went into panic mode.
Normally, his
eyes
could see in a spherical shape. The range was 300 meters. He could increase the range up to 800 meters but found his brain couldn’t keep up.
So he was usually restricted to 150 meters.
Now, his eyes were forcefully restricted to 5 meters. He looked around the surroundings.
Dante was in a hallway, the walls were made of stone and covered in mosses. He touched the walls and felt coldness spreading through his fingers.
He licked his finger and pointed, trying to feel the wind movement. There was none.
The pathway was lit by blue stones embedded in the corner. Dante looked at the blue stone and nodded. He sensed mana working in a strange pattern.
’That must be rune.’
As he was thinking about his situation, he heard movement from his back. He turned around and immediately took out his Hurlbat.
He channeled mana into the Hurlbat and it glowed in a faint light.
He got a feeling of deja vu. He ignored the feeling and squinted his eyes.
After seeing the person, he dropped his small axe and walked toward him.
"Where did you go?" Dante asked.
Thomas scratched his head and replied. "When I got here, I saw a glimpse of someone there. So I follow them."
Thomas turned round and looked with confusion. "But no matter how I run there, it is always the same."
As Dante was about to say something, a light flashed beside him. He took a step away.
Julius materialized from the light. He mumbled a few words to himself and looked at them.
"How is the situation?" Julius asked.
Dante pointed at Thomas and said. "He said he saw someone over there."
Julius tilted his head and looked at the endless hallway. He frowned. "Are you sure?"
"I don’t know. It is not human for sure." Thomas said bluntly.
Dante nodded. "Anyway, we will go there. We have two paths to choose from. Backing away is not the option."
They all agreed to follow Thomas. Their group position was the same as usual. The hallway was about 2 meters wide.
Dante walked in the middle because his eyes allowed him to get a better view of the surroundings. He could see the traps and stayed alert for a sneak attack.
They walked for thirty minutes straight. No matter where they ran, the hallway never ended. It seemed to be endless.
Soon their small talk became dried and died down. Focusing only on the walk, Dante heard his own breathing.
Then, he heard a grumble from the back. He turned around his head.
Dante noticed an uneasy expression in Julius’s face.
"What’s wrong?" He asked.
" It is wrong here. I can feel something cutting off the space." Julius remarked, lifting his palm in the air.
"How? Can you explain it to me?" Dante asked curiously. From the beginning, this hallway had been giving him a strange vibe.
"The space outside is vast and endless like an ocean. The moment I got teleported into this place, I felt like stepping in a tiny river." Julius thought a bit and spoke.
"Are you saying this hallway is made by someone?" Dante said.
"Not like that. I don’t know what to say but this place is like a circle." Julius said.
Dante looked around the hallway, he touched the moss covered wall. "I don’t think so. I have been leaving a mark in the wall with my axe."
"No. Julius is correct." Thomas interjected. "The mana here is the same."
Dante slowed down his walk and frowned.
He crouched down and started drawing on the ground, carving the stone floor with his axe.
He drew a straight line and a circle.
"Two theories. One is this." He pointed at the straight line.
"I don’t think the path is endless." Julius said.
"Me too. But I think the hallway deconstructed the previous path and created a new one. That’s why you and Thomas are feeling like this." Dante pointed out.
"The circle is easy to understand. But I don’t want it to happen because I can’t think of how to escape this."
Dante got up and started stretching.
"Thomas, you ran ahead. Julius also ran but the opposite direction. I will stay here." Dante said.
Thomas nodded and channeled mana into his body. Julius also nodded and dashed forward.
He looked at the backs of his friends and let out a long sigh. If he was alone he wouldn’t notice the change in space in such a short time.
’Guess that is because that is their respective specialty. Julius is similar to space and Thomas was blessed by some kind of mana spirit.’
