Chapter 24: Chapter 24- Distasteful Dream
This was wrong. He felt wrong. This was really messed up. He didn’t why but his instinct was yelling that Julius wasn’t Julius.
His
eyes
told him that Julius was the same old blonde guy but he was proven that his eyes could be deceived. He wasn’t stupid enough to blindly trust his eyes anymore.
Nevertheless, the more Julius spoke, the more Dante was convinced that he was fake.
So that was why he destroyed Julius’s right arm. He lied about the first axe being able to explode. It was a big bluff.
Without those words, he was certain that Fake Julius would attack him. So he had to make sure that his bluff would come true.
So he threw the second axe imbued with his mana. He then activated the rune inside the axe.
The axe had three runes inscribed into it.
The first was the rune that established the connection with the user. The second rune could store mana or pure spells into the axe.
He quickly stored a mana bolt into the axe and threw it. Because of his mana manipulation, the process was lightning fast.
Still, he was surprised at himself. Looking at the bloody arm laying on the ground, he slowly turned toward Fake Julius who was still grinning in pain.
’I can’t back away anymore.’ He said to himself and walked toward Fake Julius.
He kicked his friend to the ground and stepped on his face.
No matter how many times Julius pleaded, begged. He didn’t have any intention of letting things go.
He clenched his fingers tightly around the axe handle and channeled his mana, opening the third rune.
The third rune was the hardest to maintain and not suited to use it as a throwing weapon. That was also the reason Dante left his giant axe in the village.
After consuming his mana, the small axe glowed and suddenly mana around the axe slowly condensed.
It made the shape of the giant axe and stopped.
The third rune was the ability to create mana constructs. Although the construct was just limited to the axe shape, it was still worth it. He was unable to crack down this rune yet.
He poured strength into his legs and grinded his shoe with Fake Julius’s head. He stomped a few kicks and backed away.
His
eyes
observed Fake Julius the entire time. It was distasteful that no matter who he did, his eyes didn’t show anything wrong with Fake Julius.
His frown deepened and he let out a defeated sigh.
"Fine. You win." He said.
Fake Julius’s eyes flashed with light. "You believe that I am Real Julius right? I am your friend."
Dante tilted his head and revealed a faint smile. He then slashed his axe, aiming at the other arm. He parted the arm from the torso cleanly.
He then swung the axe in the air, shaking off the blood.
"It is really distasteful." Dante muttered. "I am not enjoying it, you know."
Dante moved his axe to the next limb. He chose the right leg. He didn’t want to risk Fake Julius running away. He had to be sure.
Even if something was possessing his friend, he had to be sure that it couldn’t escape.
After removing all the limbs, he sat on Fake Julius’s chest. He looked at his axe with boredom.
"Why don’t you just reveal?"
"What are... you talking? It hurt. Heal. Heal me please. I am really real. Tainted mana must be corrupting your mind."
"I see. You call that kind of mana Tainted. It is a great term." Dante smiled.
"What?"
"From the moment I enter this dungeon, I have been absorbing mana." Dante revealed. "That is why I don’t use that much mana. That is why I don’t help in the fight with the black knight."
Dante looked up and let out a chuckle. "Well, fighting Hodag was not in my plan but because of that I use more mana than I envisioned. I must be wondering why I am using mana now?"
Dante glanced at Fake Julius.
"Using this much mana, maintaining this mana construct. Even if the rune was helping, it consumed a lot of mana."
"Why are you telling me that?"
"Haha... This place is a dream." Dante said with a laugh.
Fake Julius laughed as well.
Their laughter was the only thing echoing in the hallway.
Suddenly, Fake Julius stopped and formed a frown. "How do you know? I am quite confident in my arcane spell."
"Hehe." Dante chuckled. "Not telling but thank you for confirming. You are kind."
He chopped straight down Fake Julius’s skull, spilling the white brain matter across the surrounding area.
He wiped the blood from his face and looked around.
The walls were crumbling into pieces. Maybe because the support of this dream fled. He stood tall amidst the crumbing, the entire time his expression was devoid of self.
Then the dream world shut down.
Dante opened his eyes under the blue light. He slowly got up and looked at Julius who was resting in the opposite direction, cleaning his sword.
He felt deja vu.
Dante sighed and repeated the things he saw in his dream.
Thomas was fighting against the black knight on the other side of the maze.
"Do you have any white clothes?" Dante asked. "I want to clean my axe."
"No." Julius said. "You have your clothes."
"I know. I know. Just give your clothes to me." Dante said, waving his hand.
Julius frowned and complied with his request. He threw the white cloth at Dante.
Dante smiled and threw the axe at Julius.
Julius lifted his sword and easily deflected the axe. The axe went flying to the air and landed neatly on Julius’s hand.
"What are you doing?" Julius tilted his head and asked curiously, not upset by Dante’s attack.
"Just testing." Dante got up from the ground and stretched his body.
"Come on. Let’s go to Thomas. I have things to discuss." Dante said.
"You know something."
"Yeah. Something like that." Dante said and remembered something. "You don’t absorb mana in the air right?"
Julius nodded. "I have been absorbing mana from the sub-dimension ever since I advanced to Tier 2."
Dante squinted his
eyes
and nodded. He didn’t see anything intertwining the mana there.
He rubbed his chin and noted. ’So he can’t mess with space.’
They arrived at the fight.
From a glance, Thomas was winning the fight. But it would take him quite a time to kill the back knight.
"Thomas, we need to end the fight." Dante yelled out.
Thomas didn’t look back and continued fighting. He dodged the knight’s sword and countered back with an upper cut, burning with flame.
His gauntlets allowed mana to be more compact, giving it higher attack power. Thomas used fire mana and the gauntlets absorbed and transformed into flaming hands.
He banged his fists and yelled out. "Give me a second. I will finish this in one attack."
He lifted up his right leg and placed ahead, twisting his waist, he also brought his fists.
"I haven’t tried giving my full mana to the gauntlets."
Julius rolled his eyes. "Always boosting. I want to see the result."
"Then you will get it." Thomas shouted and channeled fire mana into the gauntlets.
Flame hotter than the previous one surrounded his arms. The gauntlets function seemed to activate, the flame compacted even more.
Orange flame transformed into the blue one.
