Nightmare Assault-Chapter 469: Blind Zheng

Chapter 469: Blind Zheng
They thought they would need to persuade the old man, but to their surprise, when they opened the door, the old man’s attention was instantly drawn to the alcohol. After a short hesitation, the old man invited them in. The three of them sat around a small table. A ceiling lamp hung from above, radiating dim light. The room was a mess. There was barely any space to stand.
The room's layout was questionable. There was no window. A bed that was so dirty that the colour couldn’t be identified sat in the corner. A black coat was draped over it. The leather jacket’s sleeves and elbows were cracked. The old man’s life was not the greatest.
After they sat down, the old man took out a few glasses from under the table. He stared at the bottles Jiang Cheng brought. Jiang Cheng astutely opened the bottle and poured a full glass for the old man. Cao Yang didn’t sit idle. He served the dishes and placed them close to the old man.
At first, the old man tried to be serious. He told Jiang Cheng with a serious gaze, “We can drink, but if you wish to get some information from me, you should give up already. My lips are sealed.” The old man claimed, “I will not say a single word that I shouldn’t. Everyone at the hospital knows that I am the most reliable.”
“Of course.” Jiang Cheng put down the bottle and tried to butter him up. “We want to chat with you because we admire your reputation. I’m sure there are many things you can teach us.”
Seeing the wine, the old man quickly took a sip. Based on his economic conditions, he normally had to drink unlabelled alcohol that was sold behind the shop. He hadn’t had actual alcohol in a bottle for a long time already. Especially… He glanced behind Jiang Cheng. There were a few more bottles.
The old man’s surname was Zheng. The spark hurt one of his eyes when he was manning the burn boiler. Due to his prolonged drinking, the conditions worsened. He could barely see out of his injured eye. The people at the hospital called him Blind Zheng.
“Elder Zheng.” Jiang Cheng raised the glass and laughed, “Shall… we open another bottle?”
“Yes!” Blind Zheng was in a good mood. He downed his glass. Cao Yang quickly refilled it. The heavy alcohol burned down his throat and settled in his stomach. Cao Yang almost puked. Thankfully, he shoved some food into his mouth, and he looked better. In contrast, Jiang Cheng barely looked affected. He chatted with Blind Zheng. It didn’t take long for the two to become drinking buddies. Cao Yang could barely interject. He listened to the two. When they clinked glasses, he also raised his glass in a toast.
“Brother Jiang!” Blind Zheng found Jiang Cheng to be friendly and nice. He had drunk quite a bit. His only good eye started to blur. He grabbed some peanuts and shoved them into his mouth. As he munched on them, he mumbled, “If you have any questions, just ask me…” Blind Zheng burped loudly, “Your Big Brother will answer you!”
“I have no questions.” Jiang Cheng slowly savoured a chicken wing. He smiled. “I came here today merely to befriend Brother Zheng.”
“Nonsense!” Blind Zheng was seeing doubles, but he insisted, “There has to be something! If there’s nothing… It only means that you’re treating me as an outsider!”
Narrowing his eyes, Jiang Cheng spat out the bones. He smiled, “Then… I’ll ask a simple question.”
“Definitely! Ask away!” Blind Zheng’s glass was already empty, but he still grabbed the glass and tipped it down his throat like he was drinking. Then, he smacked his lips.
Actually, Jiang Cheng was already going easy on him. He poured mineral water for Blind Zheng in his last few glasses. Blind Zheng’s alcohol tolerance was not as excellent as he assumed. This disappointed Jiang Cheng slightly.
Jiang Cheng used the napkin to wipe his hands. “I live on the sixth floor. However, the rooms in the nearby corridor are all sealed…”
Before Jiang Cheng could finish, Blind Zheng sighed. He slammed the glass on the table. “It’s all because of that incident!”
Cao Yang, who was not really paying attention, quickly perked up. However, Jiang Cheng shot him a look. Cao Yang closed his mouth again.
Blind Zheng paused for a moment. Jiang Cheng didn’t press. He slowly drank and waited.
The only good eye started to lose focus. Blind Zheng’s whole persona transformed. Thanks to the alcohol, he sank into the past. “That incident… It must have been at least a decade already.” Blind Zheng commented, “Time flies by. Back then, I still had pretty muscles… Unlike now.” Blind Zheng confirmed. “It has been 18 years.”
“What’s wrong?” Jiang Cheng asked as he opened a can of beer. “Was the place sealed 18 years ago?”
“We have to start from the beginning.” Blind Zheng’s voice was different from before. There was a trace of strange melancholy. “The corridor on the sixth floor… used to be the hospital’s psychiatry department 18 years ago.”
Jiang Cheng’s hand that held the glass froze before resuming with a tiny sip. Psychiatry department… It sounded like the place had a storied past.
“Actually, before that incident, the hospital enjoyed quite a good business. Many patients would come here for treatment, especially those with hard-to-diagnose illnesses. Many of our doctors had studied overseas.” Blind Zheng wasn’t much of a scholar. For him, studying overseas was already very impressive.
“One day, I was delivering kettles to the sickbays when I heard commotion coming from upstairs. There was screaming and running. Then… there were people fighting. I was standing in the corridor when someone ran down the stairs. I remember it was a nurse. Her hands and body were covered in blood. As she ran, she screamed that there was a murder.
“I barely had the time to react when there was a thud coming from outside the window. It sounded like something soft landing on a hard surface. My first thought was that someone had fallen.
“Later, I found out the person who fell was a man. He murdered someone, his wife and then jumped off the building. It happened in Room 624.”
“624?” Jiang Cheng asked.
“Yes.” At this point, Blind Zheng had woken up slightly. It looked like this incident left a significant impression on him. “His wife was staying in Room 624. Back then, it was the psychiatric department’s special care ward.
“His wife…” Blind Zheng regarded Jiang Cheng with his murky eye. He pointed at his head. “There was something wrong with his wife here.”
