Chapter 462: A Vicious Fight and Interference (2)
Third Person’s POV
Yet this man was no ordinary person.
In that same heartbeat, long gray claws burst from his fingers.
They were sharp and metallic in sheen and deathly in element as he crossed his hands in front of his face and caught the saber’s tip between them.
Sparks exploded at the point of impact and flashed like lightning in the darkness and momentarily blinding Ethan.
The screech of metal against hardened demonic claws rang sharply through the air as resistive shockwaves made Ethan’s arm tremble from effort, but he did not retreat.
Instead, he gritted his teeth and poured every ounce of strength he could muster into the blade and drove it forward with relentless force as he was determined to push past the deacon’s guard and carve straight into that ugly forehead of his.
But to his shock, Ethan discovered that the tip of his saber stopped just an inch from the deacon’s forehead and refused to move forward, no matter how much power he poured from his body.
The thin, long gray claws clamped around the blade trembled faintly, yet they did not move back even an inch.
The old deathly demon’s eyes were filled with a taunting and an almost playful gleam as he looked straight at Ethan.
"You are still too green if you think you can harm me with your power and battle skills, young man.
Come on, show me everything you can afford to reveal before me," the deathly demon said with a crooked, arrogant smile, showing his rows of sharp, blackened teeth as his voice carried a strange echo.
"Otherwise... you may not even have the opportunity to do so later."
As those words left his lips, his thin arms suddenly erupted with a terrifying burst of explosive mana and brute strength.
A low, guttural roar rumbled from his throat, and the force behind it slammed into Ethan like a tidal wave.
He was blasted backward violently, and his body was sent flying through the air as if struck by an invisible hammer.
To his horror, the deathly waves of mana washing over him made the blackened wounds on his body flare and deepen.
The foul energy within them became more aggressive and accelerated their life-draining effect, causing the flesh around them to decay even faster, as if being eaten away by an unseen poison.
Agonizing pain flooded Ethan’s senses, but before he could even draw a proper breath, he saw the deathly demon move again.
The gray-haired figure raised both arms, and his blackened sleeves snapped in the air as he waved them forward with chilling speed.
To Ethan’s horror, the long, bony gray claws detached from the demon’s fingers and shot toward him like living spears, tearing through the air with shrill, whistling screams, making him realize how those bone spikes attacking him earlier had originated from.
Ethan reacted on pure instinct and in a flash, thick ice armor spread over his body and coated him in layers of shimmering frost.
With desperate precision, he smashed three of the incoming gray bony spikes into shattered fragments of ice and bone with his black saber, slashing the air in three quick slashes.
However, the remaining two pierced through his hastily formed defense and stabbed into his shoulders and waist.
The ice armor did not stop them completely, but it slowed them just enough to prevent them from skewering him clean through.
Even so, the impact was brutal, and waves of white-hot pain exploded from the points of impact as deathly energy surged from the embedded spikes, spreading through his body like a corrosive infection.
His muscles spasmed violently, and the foul aura gnawed at his flesh and blood, trying to rot him from the inside out.
Sensing that another volley was already on the way from his other hand, Ethan did not hesitate.
Following the strange signals whispered by the darkness inside him, he vanished in a blur, and riding the dark waves, he seemingly teleported into the thickest haze of shadow and darkness covering the terrified students below.
His rapid decision saved his life as a second barrage of deathly bony spikes tore through the space he had occupied only a heartbeat earlier and missed him by no more than a fraction of a second, leaving behind nothing but ripped air and fading traces of lethal power.
Ethan was unable to keep his balance under the immense waves of pain and weakness that had been induced by those deathly spikes, and he crashed heavily onto the ground in a rough roll.
But Ethan knew better than anyone that in battle, even a single moment of hesitation could lead to his defeat, or outright death, especially when he was facing such a terrifyingly strong and experienced enemy.
So even while his vision blurred from pain and his limbs trembled, he forced himself upright and spread his senses.
He drew in the surrounding darkness from nearly twenty meters around him, twisting and condensing it with the intent to confuse that old deathly demon for even a few seconds.
Then, gritting his teeth, he used all the strength he could still muster and tore the spikes from his body, one by one, even though they had sunk deep and seemed to cling to his flesh like parasitic hooks.
Pain contorted his face, yet he pulled them out without mercy as thick spurts of blackish blood splashed onto the ground, corroding it into melted gravel and staining his clothes as the foul metal finally came free.
At the same time, waves of icy energy surged through his veins and muscles and worked in tandem to seal off the deathly mana that was trying to further spread inside his body and rot his organs from within.
As he did this, his gaze flickered toward his saber, and his heart tightened when he noticed that small chips and cracks had formed along its once flawless dark edge.
He realized that it had most likely been damaged during the violent clash with those cursed, death-infused spikes of that old demon.
