The Max Level Hero Has Returned!-Chapter 1186

Chapter 1186
Evangeline watched Yuria and Rinne with a cold, expressionless gaze despite the two clearly enjoying the situation in their own way. What followed could only be described as a dramatic shift.
“War!! Fight!! Again!! War!!” With the divine dragon sword in one hand and a wooden spear in the other, she shouted so fiercely that not even a hint of pretense could be felt in her voice.

Uhhhh.
What’s wrong with her...?”
“She’s acting strange. That’s not how she usually is.”
No one had expected this outcome.
“Rinne, do you know anything?”
Rinne silently stared at Evangeline for a moment before closing her eyes. “Clear abnormality detected. However, Rinne s the possibility of a plausible hypothesis.
Rinne stood up. “Rinne recommends Evangeline calm down. Rinne evaluates Evangeline’s urgent state lowly.”
“Calm down? Does it look like I can calm down?! A thief just stole my treasure!”
Receiving that response, Rinne quickly returned to the group. The three huddled together to discuss the situation.
“Anything coming to mind?”
“Processor running. Rinne s rapid heating of thought circuits.”
“Then...”
“One possibility. Evangeline is an ancient dragon. Rinne evaluates that dragons, both ancient and common, have an extreme attachment to personal treasure.”
The three of them glanced back toward Evangeline, who looked moments away from unleashing a breath attack.
Then, without anyone saying a word, the trio turned their heads back and leaned in again.
“Instincts having awakened. Rinne evaluates the likelihood highly.”
“That’d explain why she suddenly snapped like that, when she was perfectly fine just a moment ago.”
“What now? If this keeps up, it could blow our whole plan.”
“What are you doing?” When Evangeline shouted and marched over to them, the three practically jolted up to their feet.
“N-Nothing at all, Miss! More importantly, did you get a look at the thief’s face?”
“No. That bastard was wearing a bear pelt over their head, so their face was covered.”
The three exchanged glances in a flash.
“Alright. Whoever stole our precious ingredients deserves blood, so I’ll help you track them down with Marky. That thief couldn’t have gotten far.”
When Evangeline rushed ahead, all fired up, Yuria gave Rinne a quick look.
She nodded and, spreading her wings, shot into the sky.
* * *
“Rinne evaluates Master Davey’s complacency lowly.” She voiced her dissatisfaction without hesitation. Nonetheless, Davey looked as relaxed as ever standing by the window of a beautiful villa.
“Rinne, do you know what an attachment doll is?”
She frowned at the question. “According to Rinne’s memory storage, it is analyzed as a doll that children form an attachment to, often from when they were babies.”
Those kinds of attachment dolls often became a sort of treasure that was hard to throw away even after growing up.
“Don’t forget that Evangeline isn’t human, Rinne.”
She was an ancient dragon, and her kind had their own form of attachment dolls. More accurately, their treasure troves.
“Rinne requests a detailed explanation.”
“It’s simple. Ancient dragons are still dragons, and dragons each have their own treasure troves. It’s not just a cultural thing within the dragon society.”
Just like how crows were drawn to shiny objects, dragons felt a deep, innate desire to collect and stash treasure away.
However, since Evangeline was raised in a human-like environment, finding the attachment doll—that is, her own lair—that would unlock her instincts, and getting her to form an attachment to her own treasure trove, was no easy feat.
“Don’t worry. Everything’s going according to plan. I even sent that rabbit on purpose.”
Rinne looked up at him with a suspicious gaze.
“Is there something you wanted to ask?”
“Rinne requests an explanation for why the Gourmet Research Society was not informed beforehand. Rinne evaluates Master Davey’s scheme lowly.”
“I believe in you all,” he answered with a calm smile. “But I don’t trust the disasters you guys cause.”
The number of incidents they’d caused over just the previous year had likely gone far beyond what even they imagined.
“Since you know now, then stick to the plan. From now on, Killer Rabbits wearing bear pelts will keep attacking her treasures. At first, she’ll try to fight back, yet because of the barrier, she won’t be able to use her full strength.”
That place they ended up stranded on was a space that Davey and Perserque had spent a long time carefully preparing.
The villa he stood in was no different. It had a studio where she could paint; a library filled with the books she loved; and massive windows that looked out over the pristine white beach. Just stepping outside a little made it feel like one could jump straight into the ocean and have fun.
Davey planned to turn the entire island into her personal lair.
After six months of hard work, that massive undertaking was finally wrapping up, with a party planned two days later to mark the occasion.
Off to one side, Red Ribbon and Blue Ribbon clumsily attached balloons to the wall with their tiny hands, stringing up a banner with a message congratulating Evangeline.
Nearby, Reina and Illyna were frowning as they wrecked the kitchen, putting together a cake just for Evangeline.
“You guys only have to pretend to help Evangeline, and then slowly act like you're getting overwhelmed. Okay? Eventually, she’ll start acting on instinct to protect her treasures. Once that happens, guide her exactly the way we’ve planned. Without even realizing it, she’ll start turning that place into her lair.”
Rinne’s eyes narrowed even further.
“I’ll be the one to connect that final location to here.” Davey smiled again. “You’ve done great so far. Tell Yuria and Marky about this carefully, but remember that Eva must never find out.”
“Rinne states that keeping a secret without compensation is difficult.”
A cheeky response came back.
“If this all goes well, I’ll increase the Gourmet Research Society’s support budget by 50% across the board.”
“Order acknowledged. Rinne reprioritizing mission to highest level.”
In an instant, Rinne took off and vanished into the sky.
“All right. Let’s begin, rabbits.”
At his signal, a squad of rabbits covered head-to-toe in bear pelts stepped forward.
They looked like ordinary rabbits on the outside, but the muscles bulging beneath their disguises made it terrifying to imagine what kind of bears they’d hunted to wear their skins.
“Let’s begin.”
* * *
Evangeline planned to hunt down whoever stole her sweet potatoes and make them pay.
However, the intruder had completely outmatched her, evading her pursuit incredibly thoroughly. It hadn’t even left any traces behind. In the end, despite all her rage, she had no choice but to grit her teeth like a rat in a cage and prepare for the next time.
Of course, after hearing about what her family had planned, Yuria, Rinne, and Marky saw the situation as progress.
Convinced another intruder would strike again at any moment to steal her precious stash of sweet potatoes, Evangeline nervously bit her nails. She frantically built a wooden fence she hadn’t even cared about before, all to boost security.
Rinne and Yuria knew suspicion could easily fall on them as well, so the two carefully reinforced the defenses with all the finesse of longtime professionals.
Evangeline, watching the work with satisfaction, smiled proudly.
The problem was, if the defenses were truly perfect, the thief wouldn’t be able to sneak in and steal the treasure.
So the three society members came to the decision to not make it actually perfect.
“She’s not normal either, of course... but he’s definitely insane,” Marky muttered under her breath, pulling a lever that closed part of the solid barrier.
“Still... I’m kinda jealous. A dad who’s willing to go this far for a daughter he’s not even blood-related to...”
She couldn’t hide the tinge of envy in her voice.
Technically, the only child he was blood-related to was the unborn one still with Perserque and Darian. Still, Davey had never let that affect how he treated the others. He saw them all as equals, which couldn’t have been easy.
Following a metallic clank, a small hole opened up. The three exchanged silent nods and moved as if nothing had happened.
“With security like this, no one will be able to get in and steal anything anymore.”
“Calm down, miss. It’s just sweet potatoes. We can dig up more.”
“No! That was the first treasure I dug up myself! I won’t let anyone take it!”
Sad news for her though, half of it would be gone by the end of the day.
They felt a pang of guilt, but they couldn’t do anything about it. The three of them swallowed hard and hugged the box of sweet potatoes and potatoes close to their chests.
“Keepson, protect this until I get back.”
She even placed a giant magical scarecrow and named it Keepson, which only made it clearer that Evangeline wasn’t human.
However, the next day, a bloodcurdling scream rang across the island.

Kyaaah!!

The three rushed to the storage shed, already knowing exactly what had happened.
They found Evangeline sobbing, collapsed beside a half-broken Keepson and an empty spot where the box of potatoes had once been.
“No... no, Keepson! Don’t leave me behind!!” She cried like someone who’d lost everything in the world. “Those... those damned thieves!!”
Even though it was almost time to start her stream, she just simply got up and ground her teeth in rage.
“I’ll get revenge... I swear!!” Her eyes burned with fury. “Rinne! Yuria! Come with me! I’m going to catch those bastards and tear them apart!!”
“But, Miss... there are no tracks.”
Their enemy had planned everything too well.
“Then we have no choice—we’ll have to set a trap.”
Yuria gently coaxed her into the idea, and though still angry, Evangeline agreed to face reality.
“Fine. Traps.”
That evening, though, the traps were effortlessly bypassed once more, and a huge portion of her sweet potatoes were stolen.
Crunch. Grind.
Her fury was so intense, it seemed she’d rip bone from flesh if she caught the thief right then and there. Her eyes glowed a deep purple and slit vertically like those of a reptile.
“This won’t do, it’s too open here. We need to move the shed.”
Eventually, she declared they had to find a new location.
The idea of holding out until rescue arrived had long been erased by her instincts. She growled, clearly not interested in hearing any objections.
Watching her, the Gourmet Research Society members realized that Evangeline truly wasn’t human, just as Davey had said. A dragon was still a dragon.
When she left base camp to scout for a better spot, they did everything they could to subtly guide her toward the intended destination.
Then, in a staged coincidence, she discovered the cave they had prepared for her.
“Look! I found an amazing cave!” she shouted with a bright smile. She then smirked wickedly. “
Hehehe...
In a closed-off cave like this, I can finally protect my treasure... my precious...”
The Gourmet Research Society wasn’t the only one left speechless as she spoke those words with a beautiful face twisted by obsession.
[Wait... where’s the poor stranded boss? She’s totally gone full rat mode.]
[How is she still cute while acting like that LOL]
[Moderation – clipped it. You know the drill. Donate if you need it.]
[Moderation, you’re the worst.]

Hehehe...
No one can take my treasure... I’m going to protect my treasure.”
She stepped into the cave, perfectly carved like it had been waiting for her.
For the first time, her plan worked. She successfully defended her treasure from the intruder.
In a cave storeroom glowing with beautiful luminescent stones, she clutched the scarecrow tightly and rejoiced, “Keepson No. 3! You did it!!”
She had suffered constant raids, but this was the first time her treasure hadn’t been stolen.
“Yeah... This place is safe. It’s perfect for storing my treasure.”
Her attachment doll—no, her attachment trove and dragon lair began to take shape in her mind.
Of course, she had no idea what lay above the cave.
