Chapter 50: A Former Roomate
"What’s wrong, Zylus? Say something." Clare thought he was in sudden trouble.
"It’s nothing."
"I see."
Clare heard every drip of water that fell into the bathtub, but it wasn’t coming from the shower. It came from his tears and the realization that all of this had been his fault.
"H-he loved to fight, Clare." Zylus said, "I ruined it."
"You couldn’t have done anything; you just have to complete this for now."
"You’re right." He cleared away his tears, smashing against the right side of his Bathtub.
Zylus didn’t feel any physical pain, but he now felt more emotional than ever. He’s still an eighteen-year-old boy, and males have feelings, too. But he couldn’t show it, because this mission was too severe.
Zylus stared into the washroom’s roof one more time, "I’m sorry, Emilia," he paused, "But I need to isolate myself. I might not be able to follow up on our promise."
Zylus curled up, "I hate it, I hate my life." He whispered.
"You have to understand, kid, war comes with emotion. And if you can’t face that, we’ll switch this mission to another cadet." Clare added,
"I can’t..." Zylus breathed shakingly, "I can’t let anyone else suffer because of my consequences anymore. I’ll end this, Clare, quickly."
Clare’s expression saddened at hearing such a young boy go through all this pain, "Remember, Zylus. You’re ruthless, remove all emotion, it’ll hold you back."
"I can’t." Zylus replied, "Even as a Demon, I feel like a Devil."
Clare tried cutting out those thoughts, "Zylus! I need you to lock in! You’re here on a mission!"
He breathed, "Okay."
Clare relieved herself, "I’ll be screaming in your earbud one hour before your class starts. So I’m basically your alarm."
"Oh, great." Zylus rolled his eyes.
"Hey! What was that?!" Clare angrily yelled.
Zylus let out a small laugh, "Thank you, Clare."
"For what?" She curiously asked.
"For calming me down," Zylus then stood up from the bathtub, "I’m ready for tomorrow." He said.
Zylus took the towel, as he began brushing his hair, in the same manner, Zylus dried his body. He tied his towel around his waist, looking into the mirror, where it hit him.
Zylus never really got a chance to see his full appearance; the entire time in the Demon Realm, he was constantly fighting. But, he realized, his hair grew slightly, finally reaching his shoulders.
"I should take this," Zylus took a hand band from the table, then tied his hair from the back, "This look should do."
Now he didn’t look like a mess, but a respectable individual. Zylus looked down, truly realizing how tall he is. But what didn’t change was his smile.
Well, not a smile, it was a serious expression, an unchanging one at that.
He took a step back, looking at the balcony from the inside, and the night was clearly set.
"Sleep time already?" Zylus started putting on random pajamas that were set across his bed, "These should do."
He tried squishing them in, but to his surprise, they were too small. It still worked out; he was too tired to complain. For some reason, Zylus didn’t feel hungry; maybe it was the emotional setback he had just faced.
"Clare, wake me up in the morning..."
Zylus received no response. He figured that Clare was asleep, so he put himself into bed, turning off the table lamp next to him.
"Good night," Zylus whispered, but the thought of Zenos losing his ability to fight still burned inside of him for some reason.
And that’s when he realized it, there won’t be an end to the consequences he’ll soon face along the road, but those consequences are going to be the factors he has to use to evolve. Zylus has seen this since he was a kid, but as he grew older, his emotional aspect increased with him.
With that, Zylus closed his eyes, tucking himself into a slumber that he hoped wouldn’t bring nightmares.
...
"Hey, Zylus."
"Hey Zylus!" Clare screamed through the mic as he suddenly stopped snoring, twitching his eyes while getting up.
"It’s seven fucking thirty, you took your sweet ass time! Now, get to changing!" She yelled, being his alarm and all.
Zylus sat upright straight away and got to changing.
...
He finished changing, and Zylus now had twenty more minutes before class started after he exited the room. Zylus decided not to snack on anything in the morning because he still didn’t feel hungry.
...
Five minutes passed until he finally reached the entrance of the academy.
"Same room as yesterday," Clare said.
"What was it again?" Zylus nervously asked, acknowledging that she’s going to banter him for being so oblivious.
"Idiot." Clare then brushed it off, "It’s on the second floor, room two-hundred and three."
"Got it," he replied, walking carefully inside.
When he got in, the halls were filled with so many eager students, Zylus felt the murmurs across the entire hallway he walked in. Some boys stood beside their girlfriends, others alone, and some in groups. The girls were in the same moment.
Everything inside felt pretty modern: the glass walls, the smooth greystone interior, and of course, the three-floor academy. It just felt incredibly prestigious, especially for somebody as poor as Zylus.
As he started to walk up the stairs, those voices met a quick end. Zylus looked up, slightly weary...
"Where did everyone go?" He said, looking upwards, just to see nobody there.
Step. Step. Step.
Each step felt heavy, and Zylus felt an unease, so on instinct, he decided to revert to his demonic ways.
[Item Unequipped: Ancient Elemental Change]
[Gaining Back Your Demonic Essence]
[Systemic Flow Reactivated]
[Demonic Weapon: Forming]
[Demonic Katana Status: Formed]
With that, his weapon, which Zylus hasn’t used in quite a while, finally allowed him to feel at ease within his palms.
"Hey, Clare." Zylus tried contacting her through his voice, but got no response. "Fuck it, I was going to pull this baby out either way." He said, directing that tone to his katana.
It was almost like he had just lost signal, and somebody was doing those tricks.
"Been a long time..." A man stood four steps before him, Zylus glared upwards towards him.
"How did you get here?" Zylus paused, "Jace..."
