Chapter 19

Chapter 19: Aries is trying to kill us all...
After the first day of work, during which Aries stunned his boss and his workers and gained favor from clients, Aries found his purpose in that business, which wasn’t to wash plates but to cook, and days just flew by as this happened.
A week had passed, and business went well at Brown Tint Pleasure House. Sex attendants went about in the hall dancing and pleasing their clients while guests ate and savored each taste before them.
Business had even been better than usual, and comical. Many wives would come and drag their husbands away from the pleasure house for a funny reason.
They didn’t come because of sex or wine; rather, it was for the food. And many wives would also come searching for Aries because of cooking lessons.
And in the pleasure house today, it was just as crowded as usual, with some customers being sent home as the hall was already filled up.
And then, one kitchen worker could be seen dashing forward toward the boss’s room, known as High Madam, otherwise called Barris.
"High Madam!" This worker had urgency in his tone as he banged on the door, and the door opened instantly.
Barris looked at him, confusion in her face as she saw his breathless look and worried expression.
"What is the matter?!" she asked, mirroring his urgency.
This worker, out of breath, couldn’t reply immediately as he tried to catch it, and when he was okay, he said, "Aries is trying to kill us all."
"What the hell does that mean?" Madam Barris asked. "What is he doing?"
"He’s cooking poison."
"What?" Barris was confused, as she fully couldn’t understand what the worker was saying, but still, she had no choice but to step back inside her room, dress properly, and follow him.
They reached the kitchen door, and a deep breath was taken before it was opened. And if Barris had been confused before, now she wondered why the worker hadn’t been more expressive in his claims...
The kitchen had been turned upside down by the Culinary Cub, and everywhere was filled with smoke. She even had to squint her eyes well to see where the cub went and what he was doing.
Aries, on the other hand, was oblivious to whatever was going on around him—or maybe he wasn’t, but he chose not to bother with them.
Since the second day of working in the kitchen, business changed, and the High Madam had made him the second head and cook in the kitchen, so many of the workers couldn’t tell him what not to do. And with Madam Valaria not around, it was left to Madam Barris.
Aries could be seen stirring red oil in the pan. The oil was originally plain but now red, and that was as a result of pepper.
A smile curved on his lips as he recalled: when he first saw the pepper laying around on the first day, he had thought nothing of it until this day. He had randomly seen it while craving hot pork pepper soup, and stir-fried ones too, and he had picked it up...
And poison was what came out of the workers’ mouths. What poison? The one which he held.
It was funny to Aries, and still, as he stirred the red pepper inside the oil, he laughed.
Just then, he felt a hand nudge him, and Aries looked to the side to see Madam Barris. So, someone was fast enough to go get her.
"Aries! What in the hell are you doing?"
"I’m simply making a meal," Aries said.
"With poison?" she asked.
"No..." Aries ascertained. "With chili pepper. I’m trying to make peppered pork soup. You’ll also like it."
"Does it look like I like it?" Madam Barris asked, and that was when Aries finally took a proper look at them all.
Madam Barris’s nose was currently covered, most of them in the room were coughing, and the room was scanty.
He scratched his hair in embarrassment as he said, "Well... you might not like it now, but I assure you, you’ll love it when it’s ready."
"And don’t worry, this is how chili pepper is meant to be—especially one that is quite hot. You’ll cough and sneeze it off and that’s it. Why think it’s poison?"
"Doesn’t your hand sting you? Who’ll even eat what you are making?" Madam Barris shook her head as she asked.
"My hand stung for a while and it’s done. Of course it’ll pepper you for a while and that’s it about it. What do you guys expect?"
Comprehension seemed to come to Barris’s face as she began to understand what Aries was saying. Perhaps they had been wrong all along about the red crop, just as they had been about the plain liquid. And now she was determined to stay and watch Aries perform magic a second time—this time in her presence.
As Aries saw that she was now quiet, he was happy, as that meant peace to continue what he was doing. The red pepper had burned very well in the oil, and Aries took them out of the oil. Then water was poured into the oil to boil, and he added salt and other spices he had discovered in the world.
There was ginger and there was scent leaf, which was needed. All these were just seen as normal leaves or poison, and Aries was just happy that at least the world wasn’t damned in terms of food, it was just them who failed to find things to make food interesting. That was why he was served raw food on the first day.
After the water boiled, Aries took the pork he had cut and cleaned and dropped it into the pot to boil. He covered it to steam. Then, in another pot, he dropped red oil and the pepper again. After that, he cut green pepper, yellow pepper, ginger, and garlic he had seen.
He removed the red pepper and dropped all these new vegetables inside and fried it, and when it was ready, he dropped the previously boiled pork inside to fry. Soon, his stir-fried pork was ready, and soon the peppered pork soup was ready...
"This smells so nice," Aries commented as he stirred the pepper soup.
When this was done, Aries took it upon himself to clear the kitchen of the mess he had created. When he was done, he looked to Madam Barris, who had been watching him with intensity, and others, and said, "Would you like to taste it?"
Madam Barris stared at him, no words forming. And the rest of the workers were quick to refute as others went about their business since the smoke had died down in the room.
Aries looked at Madam Barris one last time with begging eyes, and she said, "I’ll taste it after you have and I see that you do not die."
"Cool then."
He then dished the pepper soup and the stir-fry, and the aroma sent Madam Barris almost stumbling, and the rest were almost slapped out of the room.
Aries set water beside him because he knew what he was setting himself up for.
Then he took his spoon and scooped a full spoon of soup. Everyone watched intently as Aries closed his eyes to taste it well, and he smiled, as it was just as he wanted, though it lacked some certain spices—guess it wasn’t really necessary.
His spoon dropped and he took the water instantly. It was very spicy, and that was intended.
"You see? I said it. It’s burning your inside, right?"
"I suppose it’ll burn my inside if I don’t cook it, but I did, so no. But it did burn my tongue."
"I said it, you’ve tasted poison!"
"For Christ’s sake, Ma’am, it’s pepper soup. If it doesn’t burn your mouth, what is it supposed to do? Soothe it? It’s pepper; it’s meant to be spicy."
And all of them kept quiet at his words as they seemed to find reasons. Aries had been calling this "pepper" since, and he claimed it only burned his lips and not his stomach because it had been cooked, and he said that was intended for the meal.
This made them actually interested in tasting it because Aries was standing fine before them even after drinking water.
Madam Barris then stood up from the seat and moved closer to Aries. There, she could see the beautiful sight of the stir-fry, and that called out to her more than the soup.
She took her spoon and scooped from that. As the pork and other vegetables dropped inside her mouth, she almost melted straight away. It was divine, and she quickly reached for water. As the cold water slid down her mouth, she didn’t feel that sting anymore, and she wanted more, and she took more.
Barris took more than five bites before turning to Aries. "So, if it were to be called poison, water is the antidote?"
"Now you understand," Aries said with a smile. He pushed the soup toward her and said, "Would you like to taste the soup too?"
"Sure," she said and carried the soup. Five scoops were also made before she topped it with water and said, "This is... what is that word you say?"
"Spicy?"
"Yes. This is spicier than the stir-fry."
"That’s because I used more chili pepper there and it was intended." He took scoops and continued, "Note that this chili soup is good for cold seasons."
"Noted."
And that was how Aries was no longer accused of a crime. Rather, he was accused of making yet another delicacy that brought smiles to the faces of beasts.
As the rest of the workers had their feast, Madam Barris suddenly dropped shocking news to Aries.
"We’ve been summoned to the palace by the king."
